d100 Horror Street Crime in Hell City



So after a recent binge of historic dramas and Napoleonic war stuff I went into my pulp and trash movie collection including modern attempts to recreate 70s exploitation cinema. Hobo with a shotgun is pretty awesome and I had forgotten how horrible the featured city is with poor Rutger witnessing awful crimes as he wanders the streets before his shotgun rampage. Judge Dredd and cyberpunk and often superheroes often feature horrible street crime. Your heroes are only as good as the villains they bust and the villains are only as good as the atrocities they perform.  I would use in my roadwar and cyberpunk settings. 

So anyway this table is for walking around god awful shit cities going to hell in modern era games but possibly useful elsewhere. Its to paint a picture of the god awful studs that happens around here. If your a reader who thinks my usual stuff is misery crawl and dehumanises my readers (as one reviewer said) well this post is like that dialled up a bit more. If your crime towns not always this bad you could use in a riot or just to grab news headlines.

It's as if civic authorities wanted the city to be this bad.

1 An artwork is an illusionary gateway to the past where you can see the disaster that ruined the community began. Spectral minions inside the artwork are in a time loop

2 A necromancer has set up a base in a crypt with a d4 apprentices who have made all the available corpses into undead which they can call on. Plan harm to some community
3 A succubus lives here often in disguise d4 1=attractive spooky priestess 2=escaped slave seeking help 3=lost child needs help finding mommy
4 An underground complex connects to a pagan temple of a forgotten prehuman empire with ancient guardian beings
5 A hill near the village is a barrow and by night a wight or other undead comes forth
6 A devil swine has charmed servants feeding them and will try to capture strangers to meet the master and he's hellish influence
7 A huge serpent hides in water or a cave and is attracted to noise 
8 A hellcat lurks hoping to find a better master than the useless coward it has now
9 A mad magician breeds giant or mutant animals in a hidden location hoping to scare off meddling troublemakers 
10 A demon prince has interests here and if curse cleansed will send cult to kill defilers 
11 A good relic here is guarded by evil
12 Inquisitor or exorcist set off a false witch craze and now they are a damned undead. A headstone monument marks the dozen burned victims proved innocent

Maalus, the thing from the deep




















Oh no the wards of IP cast by wizards of old made a certain monster not viable for your old style adventures? Well I hereby let you publish this thing. Just mention this blog if you do.

The Maalus is a prehistoric horror of the deep, servants of the void and the outer darkness who once let evil undersea empires that invaded the land and wiped out civilisations. Tako octopus fairies managed to exterminate most of them from shallow seas and reefs on behalf of the dragons who rule the oceans. Some Maalus remained in the deep or crawled into underground rivers and lakes to build hidden lairs. They implant eggs into victims that make them slaves. Those that resist or surplus are injected with acid and bodily fluids drained.

Maalus prefer to allow their thralls to deal with the world but some, often those met by humans have fled their lairs and lost their minions to some enemy. These are the most desperate to kidnap victims and implant them with eggs. Once implanted a maalus embryo attaches itself to the brain and alters the creatures respiratory system and body to survive deep under the sea and serve the maalus. The Thrall worships the parent maalus and will do anything the Maalus wants. The thralls skin becomes green and slimy and they have obvious gill slits and clear eye membranes. The longer they are enthralled the more hideous they seem. Cure disease can restore a thrall to normal but the person saved needs a save vs death to survive the process or reversal often drown or are poisoned in the process. Thralls live hundreds of years as servants to Maalus and if cured at an extreme old age the human will not have aged since becoming a thrall. Once implanted the Maalus will try to imprison the person until they are overcome and if they resist for three days will be considered a poor host and eat the being instead. Some Maalus well-established breed own thralls. Various creatures and undersea races might be thralls already, some Maalus collect a variety of thrallkind as a hobby. The oldest Maalus have hundreds of thralls over thousands of years to build and toil.

While most Maalus met are the most desperate of their kind, most live in deep underwater cave palaces surrounded by mortal thralls. When the Maalus is killed (which is the only way they die mostly) its thralls fight to eat as much of the parent as it can and the best d4 combatants separate and fully grow into a young Maalus. Some even have willing host cults.

As they were very long-aged and worked with many evil powers of old some have additional abilities and stranger powers.

d12 Maalus Adventures1 Several locals have had strange dreams and have jumped into the well never to be seen again

2 A water hole near a cave has become a place of fear since several locals vanished
3 For ages the flooded mine has been a place of evil and strange slime coated humanoids that kidnap victims to never be seen again 4 Locals mutter about a cult that promise life eternal living under the sea to the faithful
5 Priests found and healed a strange sick man found on the beach who tells of being a slave in a reef with others serving a nightmarish master for decades. The man found his families graves from over a hundred years ago. He also tells of treasure 
6 Long ago a coastal village was swallowed by the sea and some say the sunken village still has people living and walking in the ruins. Sometimes fisherfolk see them
7 A ship came into the harbour and only cabin boy was on board hiding in a barely, spoke of slimy green sea folk who climbed aboard and took the crew
8 Fishermen have been wandering off at night and disappearing and nobody knows why 
9 A local idiot keeps talking about their lover in the lake who sends them dreams. The idiot boasts soon will join lover and live forever. Several other people have disappeared in the area.
10 A cult has been kidnapping victims and hurling them and treasures into a flooded sinkhole
11 A shrine to the river god has been found empty and the shrine caretakers all missing. Locals are worries and fish and ducks have begun to shun the area
12 Friendly dolphins that used to help the fisherfolk have become sick and slimy looking and rarely surface. Now they have been attacking boats and knocking them over and dragging boat folk below

Spectral Reapers




































Making up some more undead and void creatures and probably need to do some animus beings too. Probably need some psychon creatures or monster making tables. A note on possible varient abilities I mostly take one per HD or 2HD maximum.

Weapons below +2 cannot harm a reaper, they take 1HP per round from sunlight
Undead resistances to poison and magic and liabilities like holy water and turning
Gaseous form of grey fog, often form skeletal features before using a scythe
ESP 12 range it uses to follow victims and select a form to adopt based on prey
Can sense living with 24 range uses to help attack victims alone


Reapers are usually visiting the world killing people who have cheated death somehow. The reapers usually remain hidden and ambush their victim alone. Some guard certain places or be summoned or sent by an angry god. Some call them to perform public executions and terrify the audience. 
Some kingdoms their form may vary to suit local ideas of death beings. Bird-like or demonic forms are fearful forms but some might resemble loved ones to get close to a victim. Skeleton with a scythe is the common form, sometimes with tattered costumes from long ago but robes are most common. Often lurks in a confined space or vessel like a bottle or urn especially by day. Can be magically bound or sealed with spells or banished. As a vapour cloud, they may pass through tiny gaps and float up to windows as if walking invisible stairs. For every victim they carry to their fate they skim some of the victims fear and suffering and essence. As ages progress, they grow in power and gain more unusual variations.

1in20 gate to the underworld, netherworld, the void or various nightmare worlds
1in20 killing this reaper attracts the interest of some deity who is displeased

d12 Spectral Reaper Adventures1 Adventurers arrive at a ruined house seeking a gang for a bounty but all the men found dead and looking horrified

2 Someone opened a crypt to steal something and a terrible curse from a deity has sent a winged reaper to kill each night the stolen goods are missing
3 A mysterious axe-wielding executioner like figure has been seen beheading all who enter the old woods
4 A haunted old cathedral needs to be reclaimed but something haunts it hiding among the gloomy stone relief carvings based on scenes in holy texts and from the underworld
5 Cult of the outer void has made a deal with death and a reaper is allowed into this world to harvest the cut for the void kings. The cult get new spells they want for their book then themselves flee the reaper early and hide some distance till the monster sated 
6 A madman has a summoned and bound reaper and each nightfall sets it loose to murder those the madman judges wicked. They have various paranoid theories and delusions so targeting victims not precise. Authorities request help to find where the madman hides

10 Someone is murdering visitors in an inn. An evil bloody reaper is trying to disrupt local commerce and kills each night. Strange noises keep separating inhabitants when it finally decides to kill everyone and paint the walls red
11 An old disused tower has become haunted. A cult stashed goods here and called a reaper to guard the place and scare away enemies

Dreamlands






































Dreamlands are interesting to explore in many settings. In my fantasy game characters would occasionally enter dreamlands of a ruin they explored making it seem pristine or in the past. A world inside a painting or a strange manor place. Dreamlands can be chaotic places that spawn strange creatures or nightmare monsters. You can enter dreamlands that are echoes of a lost mythic past or prehuman times. You could enter the collective dream of a kingdom or place. Meditation, those born with talent or drugs are used most frequently. Magic may allow goods and creatures to pass through releasing magic and demons into the world. There is a bit of this style going at Through Ultan's Door and a few retroclone products.

Other settings like modern or SF have their place also and Call of Cthulhu has HPL's Dreamlands but there are lots of opportunities in horror for other dreamlands. Visiting Mars and then contacting the ancient martian prehuman dreamlands and even their god. Flashbacks to past disasters or warp accidents might affect the waking world. Robert Holdstock Mythago woods is a good example of an sf mechanic of a dreamlike reality of ancient myths and modern humans who deal with it. WW1 nomans land as a dreamland with haunting effects for poor bastards caught inside. Wizards might travel to and through these worlds. A dreamland might operate like cyberspace or shaman trips to the spirit world.

I've used dreamlands encounter in sf Horror and superhero games. Several characters had dreamlands based abilities like a pocket nightmare kingdom populated by imps or another who conjured animals and fire and things but they came from another dimension. When he went there it was the start of him getting dreamlands powers and conjuring nightmare monsters from enemies dreams.

The overlap of the dreamland might vary triggering minor phenomena, supernatural events or encounters. Might be interesting. The hyper reality of both might disrupt mobile phones and signals or make people vanish temporarily. Ghost like haunting effects might increase also and possibly won't be recorded on cameras. Stranger Things upside down world might be a nightmare world. Robert Holdstock Mythago Woods series is great with a machine to simulate human interaction with the other world. Faerie stories might have similar properties. Even echoes of hell or other planes might be possible through dreamlands.

The intruding reality has a kind of super intelligence but not a human one. There are patterns within that behave like intelligent beings but actually are trapped in loops of limited behaviour. Death is not a problem in such a world as you might return again but will be part of the dream reality or just awaken. Some extraordinary intelligence wants to break through to the waking world and create or occupy a body. It might be possible to create things and bring them back for an experienced wizard.

Cyclopedia and later dnd had mention of nightmare land in several monster descriptions and in the illusionist school in Glantri lets mighty illusionists just move to dreamlands to create their own reality and create dream monsters. So in old basic dnd has hints of a nightmare land of monsters with reality warping weirdness that is much stranger than Ravenloft but it could overlap. You could do a weird dnd modern and mythic reality setting using this stuff.

There are many dreamlands many nightmare lands. Like All have the illusion of being complete universes fully populated mostly form as needed. Time doesn't flow the same here either but past civilisations or eras might still exist. It is a good alternative to time travel or gates. Sometimes the waking world and other worlds are overlapping allowing strange things to enter the world, unreal phenomena or cosmetic changes in the area. Some haunted houses might be especially affected. Certain places might let you interact with dream versions of gods (use deities and demigods stats right so you can kill that form). Temples might also overlap with dreamland or graveyards.

Will try to formalise a bunch of this into some mechanics

Nightmare kingdom - borders with waking world,

Faerielands have thriving life, magic animals, faerie folk might be present, everything glistens, dark faerie favour fungus and darkness and ore creepy. Vegetation, magic animals and servitors are encounter first like sprites or goblins or birds. Elves are the most militant defenders and frequently enslave humans coming here

Giantlands is the mythic dreamworld of the giants with fuses into the infinite ruins of a sprawling giant city. Humanoids and orcs come to plunder these places for magic and secrets but some wizards and human giant worshippers might come too. Ruins and creeping vine begin to over take it too. Includes area of the great fallen troll civilisation before the mindless cancerous man eaters we know now

Arcadia is a mythical abundant wilderness with plenty of food and wine for all, vines and vegetation appear first like grapevines then nymphs, satyrs and centaurs and magic animals appear even revellers in praise of certain pleasure gods. Minor nature divinities and animal spirits live here in between incarnations. The ruins of the tower of heaven are remaining on some planes of arcadia

Abyssal planes vary but most are harsh, unpleasant and difficult to survive on. Toxic odours take over and scream and explosions and storms can be heard. Each fragment of the abyss is a leftover fragment from creation occupied by demons eager to have land and power and dominion here. Some evil wizards and chaos champions might hold one for a demon who holds many. Demons keen to torment and abuse dwell here but some are mindless. They enjoy contact with the world for real or through dreams. Mostly they are concerned with own power and cruelty but some do mercenary work for hell like getting escapees or those avoiding death.

Hell is a series of linked planes a great prison where gods decree sinners go to be tormented and possibly might rise to become devils. Demons are failed unlawful devils who cannot abide by rules. Devils have treaties with demons and angels and devas and archons. A hellish stench comes through first with imps and damned souls moaning to follow. Hell houses, in particular, have diabolic decor that becomes more extreme and animated.

Outer Void is a universe existing before and outside of reality, it is the emptiness reality occupies and is hostile to the nature of reality. Entities that live here are alien and mostly hostile to life. When you can see the beings of the great beyond the first ones are small, glassy fish like creatures. Serene at first they often become hostile and attack when they sense flesh or souls.  The larger ones are tentacled or wormlike or like deep sea creatures or cave dwelling horrors with alien intellect and some are wizards. 

Shadow Wold is a shadow of the reality, a black and white world, a noir land of smoke, mirrors and darkness. Shadow beings here hunger for life energy and are attracted to gates or living. Creatures here shun light and lurk in edges of darkness. Echoes of normal life and places but twisted into a twilight world of hunger and madness. Everything becomes increasingly abstract and nightmarish and you might meet your own shadow self seeking to replace you.

Spirit World is a domain of spirits living close to the waking world often affiliated with nature, gardens, temples, graveyards, hills, trees, forests, bodies of water, artworks and other sites. Spirits in cities are very different to ones on farms or wilderness. Some spirits are friendly some are not, many are witnesses and know local information. As spirit world overlaps mist often forms.

Cloudland is a series of other worlds in clouds reachable through tallest mountains or trees or other means. The lands vary quite a bit many are quite sweet and attractive worlds of child like simplicity, giants, goblins, faeiries, spirits, talking animals and golems living together. Walking into such a world can take you far away as the cloud moves from its location around the world. Some humans used this to explore the world. Children have had adventures here or some worlds might change humans into children.

Underworld a gloomy afterlife place where the souls of the dead eat dust and excrement forever unless their kin sacrifice to them. The better class souls and shades here dwell in cities in comfort but without sacrifices, they might be cast into the gutter if their line dies out. Spirits and shades from the underworld are often hungry and can be distracted with blood or wine poured for them on the ground. Deaths reapers and devils and undead roam here frequently. Some come to save loved ones or plunder treasure. Some caves operate as gateways.

Mythic Epochs are alive and well in dreamlands and can be visited such as when giants and gods waged war or the monster kings ruled or the fist city states of bronze. Some of these replay certain events and some are allegorical or seen as modern peoples saw past not as it was and other distortions. Often overlapping worlds makes things look more old fashioned as they were in that era.


Primordial Times when life first walked on the surface, when various alien beings walked the wastes of the earth in darkness. Gibbering alien titans of the void walked the world. When primordial dragons created first gods and giants and beast lords then tried to gobble them up, when creation began and the later generations of gods were just born. Certain beings in these times do not sense time normally and my hunt you and follow you home to eat your soul.

I did a game where most magic and weird stuff happened in a mist-shrouded dream world by night that overlapped in some places like ruins or graveyards. Faerieland was like this too in wilderness mostly. Caves had own dream underland. This let game be gritty and historical then do moments with magic more possible.

Another dozen sets of these a revision (some subtables d10 all inconsistent and older ones i didn't put concrete mods or effects so much so will revise). Mutant class seems to work well so far and class able to reroll old mutations has been good too.

Whaaat is this.

Many mutants gain powers through being possessed and tainted by other worldly beings. These spirits change people physically and mentally. Some of these beings should not be in our world and they can ruin or even destroy a body. Some take over devouring the soul of their host. Not all are evil but they may be alien or curious and not realize thy are killing victims or changing them. The entities need not remain but the hosts are changed. Their descendants might be receptive to future contact. It has things in common with the bio mutations, chaos and mental mutations. traveling through time or damaged gates or unshielded hyperdrives might attract such beings too. Some hosts embrace them hoping to become gods other struggle to remove the spirits if not the mutations. Most of the greater entities require more resilient bodies and normal ones just explode if occupied. Even a minor possession might cause blood noses, headaches, sinus pain, ear aches or other pressure related symptoms. Beings from overspace have at times been more common and at times directed evil civilizations to conquest.
