More Traps

When I was writing my redbrick dungeon zone book - I did some traps for this kobold filled hellpit but recently i found this article on VC traps and thought re investigating. I played in a game or Palladium's Recon once and was killed by my peers when I destroyed a village with rockets because I saw one tunnel - doh! One rpg death I deserved.

Anyway for a fantasy or post apocalypse game here are some traps:

If kobolds in your area local villagers probably will be more competent at trap lore - to counter kobolds and trap them. A specialized expert kobold hunter might be possible.

Animals like food for bait, treasure or body of ally work well for human.

Messy dungeons or outdoors are easier to hide traps in so better get rid of those gelatinous cubes. Water flooded area great way to hide a trip line also. Anything with spikes could have poison or infectious substances so a CON save in order.

Trap users often have secret marks which a counter trap specialist might learn but these could be faked or change from group to group of trappers. Part of trap lore is spotting and identifying trap markers.

Side closing foot trap - some of these have been found across europe from ancient times. Can be built to target victims of a certain size so a kobold could build to trap humans but would release a kobold or wouldnt work on huge creature. When stepped on foot falls through and side grab and lock target. For extra mayhem try poison spikes. An intelligent victim could get out with some effort so spikes a good option vs humans. While spikes only about a d4 or d6 , being locked while under attack not very nice.

Spike boards - buried under filth stab feet if stepped on only a d3 but may have toxins or infectious agents

Spiked see saw - when foot steps on panel it drops and a other side of spiked board hidden, pops up and stabs you in the face with spikes. 1d6 plus possibly poison or infection.

Side closing pit trap - when you fall in concealed pit spiked sides close in and trap you get stabbed from both sides while dangling in pit with possibly more spikes in bottom or snakes or something horrible. 1d8 or 2d6 damage.

Door trap - trip wire activated spiked club swings down to hit who tripped wire. 1d6 or 1d8.

Arrow trap - trip wire fires a projectile usually an arrow 1d6 or sometimes more like a heavy crossbow 1d8.

Mace trap - large heavy piked log or drum wings down on whole party if trip wire set off. 1d8 or 2d6 or worse depending on object. Everyone in line needs to save or be hit. Does need room to work.

Deadfall trap - trip wire activated spiked board or simply rubble. Can be built various sizes and can even collapse whole tunnel on party. Typicaly 1d8 or 2d6 but 4d6 or worse possible.

Whip trap - when line tripped a bendy branch or bamboo pole flexed and tied is released striking the victim with spikes on end 1d6 or 1d8.

Barbed pit trap - can be small for a foot of big enough to fall into. Spiked metal hooked barble overlap all the way down injuring victim and making removal dificult without sustaining more damage. Several helpers could release victim given time. 1d6 for a small one, 3d4 for a large one. A panicked victim must save to escape and takes more damage every attempt. Takes at least 10 minutes per attempt for helpers to remove victim.

Grenade trap - tripwire sets off explosive device or several

Bullet Trap - a cartridge with a nail in the primer or one shot tube black powder pistol buried fires into foot if stepped on

Animal traps - often hidden or with bait need a STR roll to open trap mechanism which most animals cant do. Often tied or chained up. Given STR save is for person in the trap, easier for person out side or if using a lever to open than for victim. Fox or rabbit trap 1d4 STR save to open. Wolf trap 1d6 STR save -4 to open. Bear trap 1d8 STR save -8 to open. If trapped and remain still trap damages 1pt per hour. If victim panics and moves or fails to escape with STR save get 1pt damage

Will probably add these to my earlier trap tables I have been using

Post Shopping Roundup

Been Shopping online and scoring a few products of late. Some to see what the OSR is up to before I start designing my own. Some Cthulhu as my mid era collection has been played too often and even read by some players. Running Cthulhu Britannia game for a while but some time travel could slip in.

The Witch by Timothy Brannan
A bit cheaper now so I had to snarfle this one down. Fits in well with BX and usable with lots of interesting spells. I am still a fan of the one in Dragon with Elmore art but ths one is nice. May be a role for witch in my games. Spells, creatures and magic loot bonanza.

Void Core
Ok but i prefered cthonian stars and cthulhutech and eclipse phaze but this good value very good looking game. The fiction interludes dont do it for me.

Tomb of Rakoss the Undying
Another cheap adventure the entrance is pretty cool. As a sampler for a ompany it does a good job of providing a taste,

The Manor 1-4
Good clean zine fun that makes me wanna get zine going. Have thought of a A5 book of hexes for hexcrawls myself. Mini adventures feel understated (meant to be a compliment) and can be fitted in anywhere easily.

Ruins of the Undercity
This is similar to my own redbrick dungeon zone project and im glad i didnt see it earlier. Pretty good and has given me ideas. Made me realize some of my random table stuff good for solo crawling. Tried solo Psychon hex crawling after reading this.

Protodimension no16
Online horror game magazine free here. Fairly nice production standards but has not sucked me in enough to get rest yet.

Cess Pit of the bog mother
A short oldschool module with lotsa treasure (id cut a zero off most rewards in game). Cheap oldschool fun and playable in one go. Once again Im temped to make a 12 page oldschool 2 colour module

Frontier Explorer and Star Frotiersman
Great mag for star frontiers which i am still fond of and still follow. I steal from many SF games but this one was pretty good in its day - fast and simple compared to traveller and space master. Lotsa ideas to steal. Links in titles of mags above.

Mongoose RQ Empires
Mongoose RQ stuff easy to get now even my gameshop has books cheap (i may grab clanking city). The basic mechanic of stats for empires fails for me. Id rather try plot it on civilization or use a 70s wargame. Has some ideas but at one dollar i cant complain.

Book of Quests for RQ6
A new RQ world with runes and chaos which they have needed. A little bit dull compared to questworld or glorantha. This is a big book with lots of content which could take months of play. Too big to digest but seems good quality. I will try more RQ6 stuff.

Basic Arcana
Looked appealing but i have done most of this stuff myself as have peers on blogger. Still its cheap and has some ideas.

Anomalous subsurface environment 1&2
I might have mentioned this before but this is best modules i have ever read. Actually the setting is more interesting and would fit in Psychon without much effort (id be willing to wing it). Maybe Im just scared of clowns and should go with the evil bastards. I live in a house split among clown lovers and haters. This causes problems.

Talisainia
Great stuff from 80s and beyond all free here - months of reading the world with no elves!

Machete Girl Magazine
Free here proclaimed cyberpunk magazine - aint exactly mondo2000 and seems more about rave freaks - not a gamer product intentionally

Liberation_of_the_Demon_Slayer

One of best yet - table for unhappy backgrounds is great, interesting setting, would work on my Psychon setting too. This feels more like a deliberate new wave oldschool adventure and not just a clone product. I hope to see more. Adult subject matter appreciated too.

BRP Mecha
Pretty good stuff - feels a bit strapped on but simple and walkable. I like it - well designed and might be able to use for cthulhu mecha sf fun. Cthulhu king of Kaiju here I come with a tac-nuke for you!

Call of Cthulhu Britania Folklore
Decided im gonna get cubicle7 cthulhu britain books. This one has stats and ideas for any BRP horror or fantasy game with lots stats on folklore beasties. Very well done. Also another company done adventures set in new york, i think by the lovecraft county guys so i should get it.

Atomic Age Cthulhu
Has not set me on fire really. some art flawed and would like world book section in front like most time setting books. To be fair I need to try harder to like this book. Gurps atomic horror seemed easier to love and fun. I would rather have seen more 50 dover book copyright free images than illustrations that seem modern and slightly unintentionally humorous.

Terror in the skies
Another Cthulhu book im having trouble loving. Id like to see more less complicated plots and crypt crawls like 80s adventures. Investigative games I find more linear and many end with a discovery followed by helplessness. BRP stuff seems very inconsistent in layouts nowadays. New gaslight looks better than original - most fould detailed old version Sherlock Holmes adventure daunting.

Other BRP Stuff
Will get pulp book. Was tempted by Amber coast book but i cant help but choke on glorifying invading my ancestors. For some reason I no longer want to play crusaders, samurai or nazi ss deathcamp guards. New BRP fantasy world book looked tempting but it is basically old school stormbringer system and I think I could do better myself. Fonts seem bigger and I have spotted typos which a dyslexic person notices then you editing is flawed. Iceland and Rome stuff all looks good. I was put off by roman cthulhu by the back story about gods which just didn't seem very Lovecraftian (but blavatsky maybe). Viking monographs for cthulhu dark ages look good. Cthulhu vikings looks viable. BRP Clasic fantasy quite good shame chaosium went another direction but I hear author will do a new product elsewhere. Good mash up of dnd and RQ.

Some of these things just made me think i need to publish more stuff faster.

Psychon Game Play

So have had several short sessions of Planet Psychon and some interesting characters created.

Conan generated Moritasgus a emarald skinned punk haired druid wearing living plant mail coat and expert with the spear. Moth antenna, 4 didgits in limbs and was raised by serpent men who grew him in a lab before escaping. Skilled in druidy things, making fetishes and blocking arrows. Has a pet wolf 9 foot long, crimson hair, webbed toes and a unicorn horn. Has nuetralize disease gum too.

Steve playing a Rigg, a Morlock with tangerine skin, no hair, 4 didgits and horns. Was raised in underground hell of Wallmar, an ancient warehouse bargain mart. Was driven out when discovered the managers were a corrupt priesthood. Has firearms skills and a flintlock pistol and is conversant in energy weapon theory, machines and traps. Has a pet Eldren food beast and likes to eat raw uncooked kills. Ha a disposable laser, some gems and wears a hero harness and greaves. Has water breathing pills.

Andz Playing Filgree, a falcon beast man with steel grey feathers and a stinging insect tail. Spear master with additional critical chances. Also javelin user and able to enter a battle frenzy. An able survivor, tracker and very alert. Raised on a flying citadel that raided various hexes but he was abandoned on a raid and is now lost. Has a scarlet tween goblin valet. Has a water breathing pill.

Rod playing Swiliar a Eldren with sorcerous majik, with cyan skin, long lime green hair only 4'6. Forked toungue, cat eyes and spectacular genitalia. Has many animal languages and is ver alert. His family terraformed while he was absent an\d dont know who is so he has left looking for a new home. Has a smartphone and some magic strength boosting weed and a pipe.

Polli ha a rogue with green and yellow spotted skin, seven digits, two smaller arms and a long toungue. A classic thieving cowardly bastard with two weapon fighting. Raised by mutants in the wasteland before joining a citadel gang.

Matt has Targer a Eldren sorcerer raisd by high altitude air nomad clan who follow AI named ASLAN. All Eldren of his clan have orange skin, leonine mane, a tail and pointy teeth. Has no combat skills as their god edited out all the violence from their monitor scans of the surface world. . Has holy water, a jewel that enhances saves and plays the Harp.

Ive been running them in the nicest hex i generated: Goldfang Gulch. Scarlet goblins enslave green kobolds and keep cyan trolls in stocks as food. The scarlet citadel houses a goblin market. Goblin warrior knights and witches rule and the are pretty happy bunch. They do worship the old ones but only so they dont get eaten. Treasure of the old ones and ancient empires are found laying about here attracting adventurers. What they dont tell you is mimics and shoggoths abound. Giant green cyclopses, cyan trolls, mi-go, gnop-keh and lions are found also. Goblin hunters are friendly but goblin knights keep demanding one on one combat. Witches are healers but also looking for sacrifices and offering food and treasure to young men to draw them near.

Party met in goblin mart and a witch for cash told them a god sent them here to prepare them for destiny. Party cross crystal desert under a yellow sky till reached lapis megalith plain. Attacked by a magenta shoggoth and cooked and ate some of it. Characters also at this point rolled blood colour and what they taste like. Swiliar the Eldren tasted like old sweat so the Morlock lost interest in eating him.  Captured a troll too. In shoggoth lair was 3 crystal lids over wells, one open.  Inside was a green stone with green cthonic text about fish men. Two shoggoths attacked and party killed them then used stone to summon a fish man. Druid spoke fish to creature who was obligated through treaty to serve one day a month. Two more summoning stone found. Found another vault and killed 3 more shoggoths and got some more stuff. Mostly gems and fish man gold but Swilar found a arm band (a tentacle ring for big creature). Tried concentrating on Filgre the hawkmans sidekick who fell into a coma. Swilar could her goblins thoughts inside his mind.

"Hello I cant see, where are my legs. hello?"

Swilar now has goblin lore and read goblin.

"when does it wear off?"

"Never, and has 3 more charges".

Filgree a bit miffed his punching bag harmed and carried lil fellers coma brain dead corpse away.

Good to be using my months of bonkers sandbox prep at last.

Gamelog: Cthulhu 1490 finish for a while

Cthulhu 1490 ended tonight (for a while) as heroes attacked castle of the apocalypse.

Research revealed castle built by cultist Barron a hundred years ago before being burned at stake. Family remained low profile since. Alchemical supplies in area bought up in huge amounts. A holy hermit alchemist gave them 6 holy purification potions as he had a dream telling him so. Considered wasting area with a god but decided more conventional plan - aerial bombardment and gunpowder.

Brought army in to block road. By night elite crossbowmen and sappers crept in to position putting smoke potions on air vents to dungeon and demolition charges on walls. Party wizards on star vampire dropped bombs and castle burning and ruined with smoke driving out inhabitants who were killed by elite knights. Sounds of dragon roar came out and dragon flew out killing several knights. Magic fog swept over land and archers and knights sniped from hit and run positions. Party entered and found giant alchemical apparatus dragon made in. Then battle huge demonic form immortal Barron. Only cor the pagan could harm it with his enchanted axe. Harri trapped a holy potion over a door and burned the demon but he realized quickly he could not harm it. Cor threw a potion at it and Harri helped block it's blows from striking Cor. Cor's axe almost broke. Outside the dragon almost killed a crossbowman by sweeping its tail through the fog shrouded battlefield. Several crossbowmen lucked out and hurt the dragons eye and it fled. The wizard knight brothers on star vampires chased it and tried to irritate its wounded eye more. Finally they struck it with holy potions and recharged serpent man death rays and it crashed into the mountainside dead. Inside Cor was struck twice while harry fetched the last holy potion and the two heroes slew the demon lord.

The wizard brothers joined the inquisition. The pagans went to live in the forest with elves, werewolves and wild hairy folk. Some talk of cannibalistic rituals of immortality. Serpent man in priest form fled to Briton to meet a clan of its own kind it contacted. Will run again but happy to retire most of these characters. Will be running green and pleasant land and cubicle7 Cthulhu Britannia stuff for a bit then some sf then back to 1490 later.

My biggest DnD damage ever, most awesome suicide i ever had in DnD. I left without knowing if it made a difference. I suspect the monster didn't feel it.
