Murder Hobo:

After discussion about how horrible your murder hobo must be in this age of murder hobo eat murder hobo i have decided to make the ultimate murder hobo setting in my current campaign. So will have Blood Sand Beach township described next post here.

It is a new age of dungeon exploration and exploitation.
Kill the monsters and leave nothing of value.
Kill em rob em and forget em

Murder Hobos only prejudice if how much more one corpse can make profit over another. A prisoner might make a salable slave if you can be bothered. A corpse can make bait, or a terrifying leather outfit or artwork or scary deterrent. Teeth can make jewelry or even dentures and bones can be ground and used as fertilizer like what happened to the millions of Napoleanic war dead.

Murder Hobos are not just a big naughty and greedy. They will kill and enslave everything living then sell the corpses and collect every valuable shred of loot. Even the not very valuable doors, old bones, tables, chars, shreds of cloth will go to waste. Modern Murder Hobos with bring workers to glean every scrap. Some with bring rending vats and turn corpse fat into tallow and sell as devotional candles or use as fuel to burn down a goblin fort (ancient Chinese did this last one to thousands of people at a time). A rotten corpse thrown in a well can cause all kinds of problems for the locals. A murder hobo doesn't need a mission or a cause or a story. They just need to know there are creatures they can rob and muder for profit and preferably not be called wanted criminals in civilization. While Murder Hobos might even thrive in a prison the life style could limit their money making.

Once a Murder Hobo has sated their basic lusts and desires and have some left over money then it is time to invest. A private prison is a good investment because you can use it for storing ransoming captives, receiving bribes and running other vice operations like drugs and prostitutes. Plus inmates can be turned into sweatshop workers and can help strip dungeons and glean every fibre of hair, every tooth and every brick.

Slumb lords are a common advanced career. An easy way to start is make a list of every haunted house, squatters shack and unwanted demon murder house and buy them at low low prices. Then clear them out and rent them or sell them to new more profitable tenants. A tavern is good buy. Possibly invest in a trade boat so you use it to loot and enslave backward islands far from the law or smuggle drugs or set up a slave plantation.

Also remember cannibalism is only with your own species. It's totally ok to spit roast a kobold. I do recommend if your party isn't made up of evil degenerates to not start eating dead party members an hour inside the dungeon. I find using the excuse "we might get trapped or lost and need food" needs a bit more time and desperation to be effective than one hour in the dungeon.

Sometimes you might get a mission but the only details to worry about is where the loot is. I recommend when rescuing a princess not to eat her until dad hands over the loot. A charmed doppelganger or illusionary disguised orc works just as well as a real princess but best to run away to your gruberhole (robbers cave) quickly with those old tricks.

Now to compete with the Empire's open cut dungeon mine military engineers, the Barron is having work crews use Bloodsand as a processing facility where murder hobos send dead monsters, bricks and dungeon junk for processing by the wagon load.

In the Barony murder hobos often start out as scavengers and gleaners looking for items not looted by a more advanced party. The next step is to go prospecting perhaps in the wilds looking for a new dungeon or join a shanty town near a megadungeon full of Murder Hobos, bandits, killers and scum. Finally with some experience elite murder hobos with a entourage of their own can take over their own dungeons and build their own tiny fortified camps with rending vats and prison cages on wagons.

In the Empire life is a bit less horrible and more wholesome. Most Murder Hobos start as penal dungeon scouts and are forced in by soldiers. While they explore and evaluate the dungeon the Royal Dungeoneering camp sets up a tiny fort and locates all the dungeon entries and air holes and seals them. Then they can pump in smoke and drive out monsters into archers or waggon mounted crossbows or gun arrays or spike filled pits. With a sufficient crew the Engineers will get workers ot open cut mine the dungeon. It can be risky but the Empire provides healing at least and job prospects.

When these murder hobos earn their
legitimate freedom the Governor of the Empire colonies might grant them a licence or letter of marque to explore dungeons. Freelance Murder Hobos in the Empire can work fine but best off avoiding civilization. Escapee convict scouts who cross the border to the Barony will find the Empire will have sold them to the Barron by the time they reach a tavern. Respectable Murder Hobos in nice clothes who can fake good manners might get offered officers commissions in the Royal Dungeon Engineers. A great reward might be a gifted commision and territory but mostly you pay for the privelage. You might even have to outfit and train your own troops. The Empire demands first purchas rights of uncommon magic which is a drag. If they the party fake respectability in public they will go far. What happens in the dungeon stays in the dungeon.

With the Barony and the Empire both expanding and building settlements dungeons are useful as brick mines at least. Both sides want magic items. Both sides want Murder Hobos kept busy on the frontier and not too long in civilization.

A town fit for Murder Hobos

Murder Hobos and Mayhem

Started to think how a murder hobo town might be needed to accompany a goblin mine and realized i had done lots of this before. But here is some extra detail and tables for bigger towns. Also thinking need some maps and a year by year growth diary of a town. Had good weekend brainstorm session too.

People call these shambling heaps towns but one could mistake them for ruins struck by earthquakes, mudslides and storms. Everything covered in mud, often from recycled materials made by incompetent unskilled labour. They stink of piss, vomit, rotten food and old beer. Many locals are in states of alcoholic or drugged stupors or nursing wounds in between expeditions. Those less brave simply labour and carry loot and dig holes as directed by more experienced murder hobos. Many runaways and orphans are atracted to lives of adventure and are pressed into service as linkboys, lantern bearers and pole holders. Half the population is usually outside working some absent for days at a time.
When dungeons and mines dry up murder hobos move out. When families, farmers, church going folk and law turn up most murder hobos move on. Ive also considered some former dungeon monsters would in some towns be slaves but also when nobility and cults destroyed might join the shanty town as labourers, mercenaries and prostitutes. Many murder hobos don't care if your human or not other would hate non humans murdering them and and organising genocidal raids on nonhuman camps. Women are treated poorly and might need to kill quite a few people to get respect or have aggressive defenders.

Royal dungeoneer corp - notes on how empire does it

Most start as camps with tents but these can grow into hundreds or more, turning area into garbage strewn stinking muddy bog. Some progress into bigger things and get more permanent fixtures. Ones that are started by military or guild are usually better planned as are ones where a strong leader emerges. The bigger town more law and order there is and many grow into normal towns. When big industry arrives and banks and streets and temples and law arrived and set up permanent buildings the days of murder hobos are over and the scum leave. Destroying all local monsters makes area safe enough that farming families move in also the beginning of the end.

9 Opportunist selling grob and drugs and possibly a prostitute for right price
10 Old timer prospecting for new dungeon holes, hunting game collecting scraps or loot

d20 Industry for bigger murder hobo towns
1 Foundry where dozens of workers melt metal, make tools, manacles and weapons
2 Lumber yard where dozens of workers cut wood and make walls and shacks and other goods
3 Worker Dormitories with rows of beds, latrines and kitchen for poorest workers
4 Barracks for military or mercenaries slightly better than labourers and fortified
5 Slave yard where slaves are bought and sold and caged up when not at work

16 Graveyard in a busytown will be huge with coffin makers, undertakers, crematorium and shrines
17 Builders busy serving increasing demand for specialized construction with brick and stone
18 Rendering yard where monster and humanoid corpses are boiled up to make flammable oil
19 Warehousing for stored goods, freight handlers and travelling traders, storage for hire
20 Bank and fortified administration for company owned business usually manager lives inside. Most banks are set up by merchant or banking guilds or even churches or big government and they usually bring in more law and order

I am considering making a map with several example towns - a clean developed one run by guilds from the city on the verge of becoming legit. Another horrible crime filled one and a few small satellite tent towns. These maps, all set on a 6 mile hex in the mountains a day away from Shadelport with some adventure plot seeds will make a nice book for my next landmark or sometime. Gives me a little easy to complete project for some time and a starting point for my next campaign. Another possibility is to write a ten year diary of events of how a murder hobo tent camp turns into a respectable mining town over say ten years.

I have run this with a few new player groups who wilsey didn't trust many locals and were horrified by brutish behaviour and filth. Not for nice adventurers but a buffer between monsters and the world of man. I'm not sure If I could sell a novel based on this.

The Misery of Blood Sand Beach pt2 - Street Encounters

So I was cranking out stuff to keep up my hits up and I think I'm over it. G+ and blogger seem to be slowly being killed. Im considering building a website. Ive had lots of requests to do a compilation book again. Working on something polished would cut my blogging output to a trickle. I'm more into quantity than quality. No decisions needed at moment. After last road war game will knock out a compilation just to make life easier for me to run it. Im in Sydney now with my traveling pc, in Canberra with my design pc hopefully by monday. Usually in xmas holidays I work on compilations and play Temple of Elemental Evil PC game again.

Will be a few more tables and a map coming for this setting.

I've also decided to bite the bullet and make proper gods for this setting ive been running for years. Horrible obnoxious gods. Even the good ones.

I should do some more maritime tables too. Occurred to me some prison hulks in the harbour would fit in too.

Whats Your Definition of Murder Hobo?

Which def do you like better? What would you change?

1 murderhobo
The typical protagonist of a fantasy role-playing game, who is a homeless guy who goes around killing people and taking their stuff. The term originated in discussions of tabletop role-playing games by authors seeking to create games aimed at styles of play not supported by traditional games like Dungeons & Dragons.

Four murderhoboes burned down the peaceful orc village, killed every orc in it, and looted their corpses.

2 murderhobo
A derogatory term used to denigrate old school players of Dungeons & Dragons, and considered a gross insult among real old school players and DMs. Users of the term falsely claim that murderhobo was the style of play back in the day (1974-1978) and that is based on a false understanding of what old school play is. Bitd the way that the original old school Dungeons & Dragons was played was as a game of exploration, and good play meant that you a avoided combat when possible and gained treasure by other means. A player in those days only went into combat when it could not be avoided and only killed when it was necessary. If the goal could be obtained through other types of interaction, that was the preferred day.

I don't even know you, why are you insulting me with this murderhobo nonsense?

What Would Your Definition Include???
On FB there is a assumption you murder anyone, villagers, the law, farm animals, children.

In stormbringer I did all that but only to summon demons for sex. Even my worst murder hobo players didnt kill that many ppl outside adventures and it had side effects. One player murdered a tavern owner and found in his locked chest evidence he was a member of the secret police reporting on adventurers to tax man and the law. A lynch mob surrounded the parties house and they bribed them with erotic dark elf furniture. Another house they owned got firballed by someone. So the consequences of one player cost the whole party.

If anything my players were capitalist upstarts. They argued they were not murder hobos because they had homes. I pointed out living in caves most of the year instead of the homes was a bit contentious. Killing monsters with dirty tricks rather than direct combat was pretty common. Possibly MH act like colonials on the frontier - Cortez, Columbus and others are good examples. People like Joseph Banks argued with science to declare aboriginals were not human and did not understand ownership therefore the empire should rob them. Some argued if natives had souls.

Certainly being a MH does not preclude roleplaying or story but some DMs might care too much if players don't give a shit about their epic literary wannabe creation. If they care about NPCs too much and players want to get to the killing and looting too much this can lead to the DM complaining of MH-ism. A DM with a plotted story will be disappointed if the party not interested in the hook and dont give a shit about the plight of Princess Trufflepants. Sandox settings where players can do as they please are great. If they find consequences of murder exiting and become criminals so be it. Oddly enough I find myself trying to get new kid gamers to think before killing the sheriff but if adults want to fine (I won't play roadwar with kids again possibly avoid modern settings with guns too). Kids playing thieves can be kind of awesome. I DMed a family and mom the cleric telling thieves to be good and dangling healing spells as a bribe was kind of funny.

If I want bad freeform acting I don't play role playing games. If I want a linear narrative I will watch a film or play most computer games. Freedom to play as you please and deal with the consequences is a great thing about RPGs. I rarely use adventures in DnD and if I do I like to just put it in position on the map and offer it as one of several options not contrive some involvement. My city authorities seem to be intimidating and several players have been caught by the state and forced into becoming police informers and have their earnings monitored by magical tax agents.

The worst MH game with these problems I was a Player in, was in a homebrew MERP setting. Half the party decided the pro human faction was the road to riches. My assassin helped the bard mob some druids for helping the enemy elf nation and began enriching ourselves. We didn't know several party members were half elf rangers working for the elves. Game died in arse as players split and turned on each other. Part of the problem was the setting and the DM assuming we would be interested in helping the snooty elves and would turn on the humans. It could work but the campaign goal was unclear. We never had any elves talk to us only humans telling us elves were bad. Yes we were jerks trying to break the game. Possibly the evil behind the war could have revealed themselves or made us enemies because elves were the only enemies we were presented with yet never saw or spoke to. So we got bored and roused mobs and tried to seize power over humans and blamed elves for everything. We were teenagers and the GM we were pretty iffy about but gave them a chance to entertain us. We wanted to establish something like Granbrettan from Hawkmoon but the GMs motives were unfathomable and assumed we would expose the plot over years. Rolemaster possibly more murder hobo than dnd - nobody wants a fair fight or any fights if possible in pursuit of cash and power. Nowadays I would just leave the game, then I had the gamer student house.

Assuming your world is entertaining and the plot hooks are engaging and being outraged if players don't want to be railroaded by your premise is not the players fault. Playing to the players interests if better than dictating them. Calling them murder hobos in the pejorative sense (especially if you never played oldschool and just jumped on the mob understanding from some forum) is lame. If players want to be outlaws you can still have fun.

Please share your MH stories and definitions!

Will revise my murder hobo book some day too
