World of Cthulhu Metropolis

Previously I described the city of Metropolis here but here is some more detail on the world of my deco super city. I coined deco punk as i find diesel punk too crude and wanted to feature deco-modernist futuristic design.

I hope to run this as a con game soon and will do some encounter tables. Promising to be a good pulp SF setting or alternate universe. Robots and space travel are just a step away and characters could be involved in some of these wonders first uses.

2026 and the city of metropolis dominated the world economy and houses 52 million persons. Spanning central Europe including Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and France those old nations have come to be dominated by the great city.

But what of the rest of the world?

The novel 1984 I use for Britain during a phase in the 20th century during the great war from 1940-1970. Plague collapsed that regime and turned the former great island nation into a wasteland of warlords and despots bareley able to support aircraft and desperate for fuel and parts to battle each other. Plague victims were shot on sight. This ended 1970 when engineers and mechanics from the Wings over the World organization came to restore civilization to the blighted places on earth from Basra.

While society by 2026 is fairly free and open occasional demagogues take advantage of the mass media used and occasional form dangerous hysterical mobs that the cabal responds poorly too. A faction deny progress and reason and want time to stand still instead of adapting to change. This situation has kept Metropolis the superior power. The Cabal is a kind of anarchist state where oligarchs are selected from best and brightest by aid of computers. These leaders may come short against popular rabble and mobs that sometimes arise and end with destruction of some state project. The state lack the power and will to control the mob and possible foreign agitators take advantage of this. English fashion is very different with capes, new materials and shoulder pads. Black clad military wear suits offering some protection versus bullets.

This is based on HG Wells film Things to come. Has some awesome deco tanks and other tech.

America was less affected by the war and plagues but retreated into itself. WOW had a influence over rebuilding and America was well recovered by 1980. Vast cities of 250 story buildings connected by suspension bridges, with air transport extremely common for personal use. Eugenics and social engineering have taken control during the great war, now all are ruled by the Tribunal in the name of impersonal science. Names are replaced by numbers. The population take pills for food and recreation and are governed by petty red tape and regulation and at times heartless engineers. Babies are produced by state incubators from machines for married couples. The Tribunal dictate who marries who giving preference to high achievers.

Despite this control and supposed objective social strata, the super rich thrive and compete with the Metropolis bank and prey on the underdeveloped world. Outside the great sprawls of the east and west coast and a few other mega cities is largely wilderness with automated factory farms and those who reject modern life living like hill billies still subject to the great plagues left from the great war.

As a hat tip to the King in Yellow suicide booths are in public parks.

The film Just Imagine I am using for America. Has awesome Hugh Ferris inspired design.

W.O.W. in Russia worked with the remains of the Soviet Union to produce a great worker paradise, free from rich elites. While great cities do exist they are crowded, with often collapsing infrastructure, shortages and highly polluted. Areas are still plague ridden and underdeveloped with huge refugee camps and resettlement programs and backward technology. Still trying to influence the underdeveloped world and at odds with America and European agents of Metropolis. Get on better with England, a major trading partner. Vie for control with Metropolis over crumbling eastern Europe which never recovered from the war fully. They still speak of world revolution and have a strong patriotic streak despite their poorer living standards compared to the powers of the English Cabal, European Metropolis and the American Tribunal.

The great powers are at peace but small conflicts supported by them using old weapons still happen. Plague still keeps some areas uninhabited mostly or free from organized states. Warlords thrive but occasionally W.O.W. remnants of volunteer armies invade to deliver civilization.

The space race is also on with Briton developing a space gun, Metropolis a moon mission, Russia and America aiming at Mars. The moon is a barren place occupied by insectoid selenites who dwell in great underground fungus forests and crystal cities. Mars has advanced decaying cities ruled by decaying science priests and royalty who watch earth with great fear and suspicion through telescopes. Aelita the Queen of mars watches with fascination but the science priests fear contamination from earth and its more egalitarian ways. Outside more primitive peoples live in strange jungles including a race born twins who dwell in separate tribes from birth that wage war against each other pointlessly. Primitive orangutang like ape men are employed as slaves and entertainers by these savage twin people. Radio from mars is occasionally picked up spurring men to visit.

Mars and Russia in part based on film Aelita and Just Imagine.

Old popular mechanics are good tech inspiration for "new" technology. Cars have not advance too much nor planes but autogyros capable of short landings on rooftops are common. Airships are the most successful long distance travel but airliners and bombers can fly world wide. Guns are rare in the developed world and have also not developed much. The American have a .22 automatic pistol with a large magazine capacity of 30 shots with a box like appearance.

Androids and Robots are just starting to appear. Russom's Universal Robotics have made progress with metal men but men derived purely from chemicals, more lifelike with synthetic flesh have been developed and are helping to re-develop Czechoslovakia. The downside is the androids are increasingly human and elites are replacing workers and have come to prefer them as lovers. In the rest of the world robots and androids are still exotic but after the events in Metropolis will become more common.

Africa, Asia, Latin America and Australia are messes with some modern cities heavily supported by the great powers or W.O.W.

Warlord controlled regions and backward wastelands are still dominant. In Africa a species of semi intelligent giant newts 4-5 foot high have been trained to perform menial tasks and are edible and have been used in some areas in Africa. A few have claimed these creatures might have souls and feelings. Some have even been trained in underwater welding and construction.

Some Japanese city states have adopted Robots also in a push to join the great Powers, even invading China and competing with the great powers. Finland is a pocket of advanced technology that struggles against the Soviet Union.

Sydney is a great Deco city of the south and famous for its huge 3 way bridge with huge tower built on a harbour island.

Some explorers in depopulated plague zones have discovered isolated communities, underground bunkers, mutants and other strange things. Many mysteries await.

Karol Capek wrote RUR and War with the Newts two very awesome works I recommend. He invented the word robot.

River city encounters for Marvel Super Heroes

Have enjoyed running marvel again and do have a few things id like to do like a d100 evil clowns table. One thing I need now is this: encounter tables. Villains and vigelante's game had a good one.

Individual events are for each player. They don't need to be a big distraction, depends on story but could be worked into a bigger story too. I considered all make a luck roll (base karma score - lower colour worse result) or everyone roll a d10 and lowest gets burnt. All depends on how long session is.

I used to start every session with 5 news headlines and some personal issues

1d10 Individual hero problems
1 Power problems - something wrong with power or superhuman abilities
2 Origin problem - something from your past and gaining your powers comes back to haunt you
3 Resource problems - cash flow problems or difficulties at work threaten heroes livelihood
4 Contact problems - a contact needs your help or gets caught up in trouble or current story
5 Enemy makes some kind of attack or threat on hero
6 Popularity problems - a media attack or some damage to heroes rep reduces popularity
7 Secret problems - hidden identity or other secret under threat
8 Hardware problems - some item of tech or equipment or structure failure
9 Family problems - some family or friend from past wants to bug you
10 Government or agency or organisation take an interest in hero

d100 if Street patrol
+25 if base Monitor Duty

Exile Log: Evil does not pay

So my favorite elf and halfling adventurers were in the adventurer pub in Froghop village. Everyone here adventurers planning on going to Hell Hills dungeons. The lads didn't talk about their recent escape from the wizard school as agents would be in local village and the wizards were probably out for revenge. The elf recruited a barbarian girl tired of her mach tribal adventurer band. Both decided to go to city to trade the necromancer scroll they had found from the time when necromancers ruled when the elder age ended thousands of years ago.

So began the treck, but the halfling's girl Friday asked if she could stay, get a job and look after the darkstalker baby he bought in the goblin markets of underland. He gave her some cash and reminded her to keep baby out of the sun. She rolled her eyes and agreed. Rene the thief and the elf's riding spider tagged along.

They hiked through the roadways and when came to the shortcut through Grogtown, a nasty scum filled dive of a village with five horrible pubs. The only village industry in horrible bars for crooks, evil merchants and gang scum. Only village where orcs and goblins in the streets like Shadel Port. Guys didn't want to pay a silver entry to the best pub and went to second best for lunch. Met a gnome who asked if they had been in underland and which way they had come. They unconvincingly tried to bullshit him and hastily left.

Almost in city before gates closed when saw a sly grog shop by the road where ugly old woman in a tent offered them a drink. While they debated why they should bother they saw a shack in distance with a wall behind it enclosing a space, covered in Ivy and not visible from road. The lads asked about it and the shanty campers said they avoided it as men disappeared there and heard odd noises.

"Sounds like a job for us" said the lads.

Went to door of the shack and kicked down door. Inside a pig man leapt from bed and charged with an axe and the team killed him fast. Rene was felled and halfling declared he was too weak to save and let him die.

"I want a follower who can take more blows than that loser"

The barbarian girl Nora did very well and lads pleased with her efforts. Found house full of herbs being dried and pig mans crude possessions. A heavy door through the wall had a big key to open it on pigmans soiled bed. Within the wall was a overgrown garden. In the back was a greenhouse (a fortune in glass), three tiny buildings and a small house.

Knocked on the door and barking dog men opened the door.

"You no meant to be here" they barked and a wizard in his night robe came down stairs outraged by unwanted guests. Party attacked killed smaller dog man and the wizard charmed the elf. Followed with a few magic missiles, party killed the big dogman and then dog-piled the elf while halfling cut wizards throat.

Tied up the elf and searched the pretty cottage. Found food, booze and lots of nice china. In attic was horrible vivisection lab where beastmen being made. Jars of beast fetuses, horrible manuscripts and blood spattered tools. Party slept and by morning elf snapped out of charm. A knock at door and a pathetic hedgehog man with a bucket and brush. Halfling stood on a stool and put on wizard robes and cut his beard off and tied it to his face.

Beastman announced it was feeding time and halfling said everyone being punished today no food. Hedgehog sobbed that prisoners would eat each other and hobbled off to the toilet block he lived in. Guys saw old limping bloodhound man with crutch looking out from shed. Party found a sack of hide biscuits for monsters. Went to cell block and put some drugged biscuits in food hole and creatures inside calmed down. Elf made more sleeping potions in lab an drugged a crow man who lived in the greenhouse where they killed a tree monster. Bloodhound and hedgehog resisted. Hedgehog was into chores and bloodhound man showed party around shed. Furnace for burning remains and rendering animal fat into tallow. Was tools for woodwork and maintenance and party got idea of staying. Found a chest with a few hundred silver.

Opened the cell door and killed two more dog men and rabbit and cat man. Went into basement and found a moleman working on tunnel to city sewer system. Guys decided a quick trip to city would save them getting all red tape and passport papers. So into sewer system and elf heard some noises. A gang of thieves tried to sneak up on them but with superior night vision the elf killed them with his bow and rest fled. Met some friendly rat catchers and asked for way out. They said 6 coppers for directions (enough for each to get a drink). Elf said no way here is three coins. They shrugged and showed them a manhole they unlocked for party. Up ladder into a clean paved courtyard surrounded by walls and towers. The manhole clicked. Armed guards grabbed the party and locked in cells. Aparently this was secret police precinct.

"Three lousy coppers and we get this"

Party tried to lie to secret agent but a priest with them confirmed lies. Got party history and said how bad it would be if party stalled and wasted detect lie spells. Police convinced party nobody adventurer scum and sent them to the dungeon games waiting cell. Returned goods and offered party to bet on selves and healing potions.

Gate opened and guys crept down into dungeon. Found a druid with a pet wolf and a crow and donkey. Guys offered him join forces and gang began to search rooms. Got leeches in partly submerged cell area and saw a kobold flee. Found some trap parts in stack and imprisoned frogboy who was being used to unblock cisterns. Kindly druid adopted him.

Found a room with kobolds working on trap repair and bullied them to take wand from stony demon mouth in wall. The hugged wall and one stood on others head while protesting this was against rules. Grabbed wand, slipped and hit floor which opened and dropped into scorpion pit. Druid saved one kobold and the fevered little guy was alive but ill and was put on donkey. Druid scooped up a box of scorpions for later.

Tried to beat down a door and 8 goblins charged in all but one killed. Halfling killed him with a rock.

Found a series of levers in a wall the elf poked with a staff to find room flashed and hit with a curse. spell. Most resisted but scared. Found a fungus garden and saw a a distant gnoll spy on them with pet hyena. Druid tried to be friends and in group conversation realized his new team mates were evil.

"You guys are jerks" and he left to make friends and bring peace to dungeon denizens.

To be continued....

Cthulhu Vikings: Ragnorak Now!

Ragnorak Now!
I am using a mash up of current BRP/Mythic Iceland, RQ3 and Ringworld. Influenced also by the Microprose PC game darklands version of BRP too. I have not really read my RQ6 lots yet and will get some stuff from it but a few things lost me. Reducing damage from damage bonus and pole arms was main one and introducing skills I think should be covered by stat rolls the other. In interested in magic system most about RQ6. In RQ3 I never liked the stat derived bonuses as they were one of the more painfully complex character generation things that needed a table in a book and could not derive by memory. I'm using my own variant based on Ringworld. Mongoose RQ I'm using some monsters and a bit of some magic skills. I mentioned some of the rule books of various other systems before with viking content but the RQ3 Vikings box set has everything from a respectful tone, good history, a good campaign with chapters that can be changed and reused many times. I will be using this and Iceland every session as main rule books.

Basics
First  party all start as siblings and cousins in the Stonedale clan at 15. Two hunter brothers (one a bit gung ho and other wants to be a warrior). Twin sister crafters (one a great beuty and other famous brawler who protects her sister from all advances - local boys all scared of them). Another was sent away to serve on the Jarl and raised by Stonedale clan rivals. Has picked up some Skald skills like poetry and has fanciest weapons even though he is weakest of teen vilkings and is a fairly clever. Another is a farmer.

Future characters will miss out on multiple skill rolls this first group get from from growing up year by year as vikings and have variable ages. I will allow third character to be foreign. I Like the idea of stat derived movement and have 1 second combat rounds

Other foreigners might get better EDU but less STR and SIZ. A foreign monk (or slave) could be handy in later phase of game.

I'm using Iceland for animal totem fetch based skill points (20) and and then (30) from family occupation per year. I let bonuses start by picking one stat of the two in the pain that together equal the max bonus. Bonus starts equal to one of the two ststs in brackets and can be increased in play up to both of the stats. Magic has no starting bonus. A few BRP skills I never like like bargain.

Bonus is added to skill roll for total. Every experienced hero will have maxed out their bonuses. Skills gain a d6 when improved, bonuses get 1%.

Cthulhu Vikings: Growing up Norse

First  party all start as siblings and cousins in the Stonedale clan.

Breidr the Dauntless, a farmer lad from the back hills, follower of Thor armed with a crude short sax sword and a hatchet, also quite good with some crafting skills including hide and whale ivory. Has thick hide armour made with his brothers help. He is brave and most handsome of the party.

Thorhaddr the lame, a clumsy unlucky boy sent to serve the Jarl and being raised by the more wealthy rival clan and ended up with lords scalds learning language and poetry. Has treated hard leather all over, a full round shield and a sword. Has fanciest weapons even though he is weakest of teens. Mistreated by his own and adopted clans he has become devious. He likes Odin best and can read some runes a bit.

Alrek the Unruly a strong, handsome and outspoken youth who's almost a year older brother Hrafn keeps him inline as he is a bit smarter and quieter. The brothers are hunters from the hills and both keen for adventure. Hrafn keeps looking for warriors and beserkers and raiders to impress. Alrek has tried to a lesser extent and they ignore him. Alrek likes Thor and Hrafn likes Odin.

Twin sisters Throa Wartooth and Thora the Red are daughters of a crafting family. Throa likes to brawl and bite and many boys are scared of her. She is plain but her sister Thora is a great beauty famed for her long red hair. Boys for miles around are wary of them and father doesn't know what to do. Both are crafty but Throa likes wood, metal, amatuer butchering and has an interest in boats. She isnt commited to any god yet but Thora is interested in Freya and is always helping older women treat the sick and cook. She learns
Im running stuff from RQ3 box set for now.

Party have been gathered as all the clan youths of good age to try to develop the clan hearth which is ailing and whole clan so poor in danger of becoming thralls. Hope to have youths help prosperity and get noticed by the right people. Raiding business is booming and Clan leader Hord hopes these kids can get in on some action.

So Yule festival is full swing, the extended family have gathered for drinking and a roast sheep, warm inside from the terrible cold and snow. Suddenly the door opens and in comes a cousin with broken ribs and bite marks. He collapsed and was rushed to bed speaking of wolves, starving mad and fearless attacked his stead house.

A rescue party was sent and able men and party left the house to see if any more kinfolk alive. On way passed another house and youths told to check another house while veterans went to the house under attack. Trudged through blizzard to see house and smoke from chimney. Wolves were circling and yapping and one was huge and black. They charged with Hrafn and Thora using arrows badly hurt two wolves.

The great black one went around to rear while the other four youths charged a wolf and easly killed it. Thinking that easy they split up and attacked a seperate wolf each resulting in Breidr getting bitten in groin and Alrek getting his left arm mauled twice. Several more wolves were killed and two fled bleeding, but the great black one prowled in and out behind the building galring with evil red yellow eyes. Thorhaddr and Thora tried to treat wounds and others begged to be let inside. Youths entered dragging dead wolves and grateful women and old man aided them. Foul black wolf scratched and holed and fled. Troa did some shoddy butchering and Thora Cooked wolf stew. Briedr prepped the pelts and Alrek gathered some teeth.

In morning they found wounded bleeding wolves that fled were dead. Older men came to find them and everyone ate more wolf (dont eat livers). Returned home to find story of the wolf fight had spread.

All returned to respective homes and worked at their normal family occupations over the year. Youths met at Thing the following year. A great ritual at a rock with holy folk, law suits before the community, animal fights and feasting.

Breidr the Dauntless traded some goods and made prayers to Thor and Hiemdall and went to help work on boat a few days before important stuff started.

Thorhaddr the Lame met some scalds and talked poetry. Told he could be taught songs of inspiration. Looked at shrines to Odin and Balder.
Alrek the Unruly tried to impress some raiders and hunters and they seemed put off by his flashy looks and manner for one so young. He made some small sacrifice of food and expected to be lucky. Was warned to be careful talking like that or Gods offended.

Hrafn spoke well and met some sea raiders who good naturedly said in a few years he might be big enough maybe. Tried to gift a psychopathic beserker beer but he just growled. Hrafn decided guy is scary.

Throa Wartooth when not watching her sister Thora the Red, went boat building too. She made a mistake and was told off but boat builder let her off as he had not had a girl be so keen on boats before.

Thora spent time with Freya priestess helping sick and preparing for community rituals. Managed to gain a 1pt healing spell and impress the holy women who helped her feel the elves inside the huge beutiful rocks the Thing was near.

All gathered for ritual to Tyr then watched various legal battles including two murders (killers paid but not happy) and a divorce. Hrafn had to vote against the beserk he tried to befriend before and got a cold look. He deslared the law was a bother and he did not want to learn about Tyrs laws and proceedings. Older vikings thought him foolish.

As all began to party vikings began to boast. Briedr boasted he was most handsome and demanded women vote. His cousins abstained but he still won. Alrek boasted he could have the most sex and dared women to take him on. The now very rich widow invited him home and spent a few days with him. He wanted to get away but best bed and food he ever had. Living in a palace compared to home. Eventually went to leave and she gave him a proper sword which we was impressed by.

Thorhaddr conducted himself well and elders thought him promising speaker.

Throa scared off some more boys and her Thora sacrificed a goat in thanks.

A following year and all meet in again. A loveley day all taling of last meetings when a child came running calling out "Vikings"!

Throa thought "but we are vikings why would they raid us"?

The answer of course is with all best fighters gone it is easy.

MARVEL Background Options

So I've been running Marvel as a fill in game as an hour or 2 or any amount of time easy for me and lots of guys in club can easily drop in and out even in a fight. Had a table of 14 in one DnD in club other gay as garage wont fit them in any more and vampire LARPers hired venue which has brought in some new members. A big 40k campaign bringing old members back and some newbs too which is all good.

I'm writing up diabolic items, some more decopunk setting stuff and trying to edit my basic rulebook so i don't have time to enter all the blogger contests at the moment. Im not really into competing in anything really. Supposed to be painting but I am really struggling to do any art or chase money owed like some kinda block. Buying Gangbusters box set and Worlds of wonder and Purple DnD box from late 70s. Id like to run trouble brewing campaign with 6 crooks and 6 cops but i might change rules to BRP. Gangbusters has lots of good things including best crime rules ever. I have had all modules since 84 i got a buck each for Cthulhu. Map and tokens one thing I wanted.

Tried to buy 3 marvel maps for $10 as mine died. Will hunt some more down after my current foolish purchases.

Ran a good fight on a Train in Marvel in 2 hours after Vikings game that was good. Hope to get some more Psychon fitted in and work on my con games too. Oh and get more work so I can eat.

MARVEL Background Options (Again)
I'm revising these to make one final version as I have 3 different versions im running from and the random roll needs to be expanded for a decent dice roll possibility. I have used several systems for making stats and powers. The basic human profile plus 5 "ticks" to allocate among stats. Add one or two ticks to the stats and add a rank for each. Options system has lasted longer than any character gen system but i want a version for me and my players to access.

You may pick 2 options
or
You may pick one, roll 3d10 on random table and let Judge pick one
or
Pick one and roll two times

These could be purchased like powers for 3000 points and some could be group purchases like a team base or vehicle

Marvel log: Lost Zombie Heroes of Yesteryear

Stormwing and her kid brother sparrow were telikineticly flying over River City on the lookout for trouble. The duo were getting a good rep from preasuring gangs and metadrug monsters that had been active of late. The siblings were kidnapped by aliens and empowered to fight evil while flying over the Bass Strait Triangle.

Tabloidia the garish tasteless clown prince of vigilantes was following them, snapping her with his otherworldly x-ray camera (just for his own spankbank). Tabloidia was a trash journalist who found a strange artifact that became his alien camera and granted his strength, flight, teleport and x-ray vision powers.

Meanwhile the new hero Transmission was in his computer store faking his inventory to find who was knocking off computer parts in River City. Having been an ex consultant for government spooks he had returned from Nepal where he had learned exotic meditation skills and gained his danger sense power, superior mental stats and incredible agility. Having built his crime lab armoured van and web shooter wrist gun he was ready to be a hero wit his white suit, cape and mask. Had been faking inventory to attract a computer crime wave to his shop.

As he was online at his desk fluro punk haired cyberpunk gangbangers with mirrorshades came in with a SMG and shut the door. Ordered him to open the back door where more Neon gang members waited with a van. Being impressively fast he pressed the duress alarm calling the cops then bolted into his crime truck.

Sparrow spotted suspicious gangsters outside shop and told his big sister. He sat atop building watching while she flew over the buildings to check the alley. Tabloidia hung back snapping photos of her form hugging meldsuit. One ganger tried bashing the armoured truck with a shotgun stock while rest loaded loot into a unmarked van. Transmission popped out the underside hatch through a manhole and ran down the drain to another opening and sneaked up on the alleyway. Stormwing lifted the van and blocked the rear shop door and Transmission took the chance to step out and web one on the goons arms to his body. A gangster tried to climb over the van while sparrow held the front of the store door shut with his TK powers. Stormwing moved the car so gangsters couldn't escape so several smashed out front store window and into street. They saw sparrow and shot at him with no effect in his alien meldsuit while he held door closed.

Transmission webbed the one crook who got on the van roof. Stormwing waved at the new hero and went around block to intercept the goons shooting at her bro. One crook tried to run with his arms bound in web so transmission chased him and webbed him to the ground.

Sparrow pulled a gun from a crook and tried to chase him with the gun announcing that crime never pays. The four remaining crooks fled into an underground carpark. Tabloidia saw them and tried to port in but concrete threw him a bit and he appeared in entrance way to see two try to steal a getaway car. Meanwhile of two that didn't quite make it into garage, one was struck by a forcebolt from Stormwing and crashed face first into asphalt with a horrible crack. Sparrow flew down to help and used the gun he was controlling to hit another fleeing crook.

Tabloidia tried to port into car but missed so he tried to lift the car with his bulging muscles. He also had a few bullets bounce off his new kevlar suit, Then his suit tore open with armour plate grown from his chest camera covered him all over - a new power stunt. The car squealed to escape and he tore off the bumper bar.  Sparrow delivered first aid and rounded up the webbed crooks while Storm wing held onto the car steering wheel causing it to almost crash. Tabloidia teleported in front of it and it managed to stop. Transmission arrived and spooged his webbing over the windscreen while Stormwing lifted the whole car. Tabloidia tried to tear seats out through the bottom but just tore holes.

The crooks surrendered and police arrived. Tabloidia told them off and was a jerk. Police asked if Tabloidia or Transmission needed to be arrested as they were pretty much unknown. Stormwing explained all to cops and heroes agreed to meet later at the rendezvous point - a top floor of a derelict hotel he used just for meeting heroes in. They looked for missing shop owner and couldn't find him but Transmission said he was ok. He went on to talk to gang member. When Transmission saw Stormwing send upset car owner to a garage for free, he asked if the shop window might be fixed too. Tabloidia's armour began to disappear and left him naked without his kevlar suit so he left.

Heroes met later in the old hotel. Place is a mess with just filthy old mattresses. Tabloidia in his old spandex suit offered to give sparrow some wrestling lessons on the mattresses. Sparrow thought this was legit but Stormwing chastised him and said never never ever go anywhere with Tabloidia alone. Tablodia said team should spy on Mayor who must be a crook. Transmission denied having any powers except being smart and explained he knew some gang members from his teen hacker years. Some gangers said they were getting computers for some guy in drains who also gave them the guns. He had tracked the meeting point to being beneath Hermes chemicals, owned by a rich Greek family from oldtown. Family head who owned factory had disappeared 7 years ago at same time hero Mercury vanished.

Party spied on family home to see Greek family drama with nothing strange. Transmission found the home had genius security also 7 years out of date. Followed link to Hermes corporation HQ in CBD and discovered business had boomed last 7 years since experimental research lab had closed in factory with no more demands for weird chemicals. Factory also made chemicals in huge quantity to stop alien insects a decade ago for government once. Brother of Mercury was about to inherit everything which made them suspicious.

Party found storm drain connected house to factory and found vault entry to house. Transmission used his clairvoyance to probe secret room under house but found nothing especially suspicious. Followed drain to factory and and found sealed door. Tabloidia was going to smash but just x-ray looked at tumblers and dialed up the right code. Went up ramp into huge basement with huge vats of acid and volatile chemicals and a weird lab.

Searched about and Transmission got bad vibe from one vat and and more less bad vibes from a cylinder of mercury next to a human sized pod with a man shaped palette inside. He went on to play with computer to find lab has been working on something bad. Sparrow opened a barrel with his TK and it had a partially dissolved caped corpse in liquid. Tabloidia found three more. Also found caduceus staff made from strange metal and tech in a trunk. Mercury had owned it and the cylinder of mercury bubbled when scepter near. Transmission found Mercury's plans to recruit new heroes into a team. Tabloidia had to leave as his girlfriend wanted him to go to the bottle shop for some grog.

Meanwhile a tap opened and green slime poured out into form of a large fat naked man made of slime. Transmission's senses tingled and he saw the thing approach them and warned his buddies. He told them he was to join them in his team. Stormwing berated him for doing something to poor Mercury who only wanted some friends. Stormwing saw man gesture with his fingers while man said he was former forgotten hero Dr.Acid, now he was just Sludge. Transmission sensed something wrong and turned to see barrels open and zombie superheroes with tattered capes and cowls crawl out. Transmission called out and the fight was on.

Heroes were still inexperienced at fighting capes. Four Zombie heroes lumbered forth muttering smash, burn, hit, blast! The black one was Shadowstrike a strong guy. Green was Emerald Mantis with two sticks he waved about, a shadow of his past martial finesse. Orange was Flamesong a pyro and the last one was Purple Helmet a psychic flyer. All minor forgotten AWOL heroes of the city from years ago. Heroes hid behind a force field from Stormwing while he backed off. Sparrow tried to TK grab the purple flyer who zapped him with a mindbolt. Fire, fists, sticks and Sludge's acid bolts bounced off.  Stormwing dropped the shield and fired at Sludge as he directed his super zombies to attack in unison to break the shell. Stormwing fired a bolt that accidentally shattered a tank of hyper solvent. Transmission foolishly charged and took some blows and partly webbed the purple zombie. The zombie mindblasted poor sparrow again and he resisted.

The more experienced Stormwing pulled back to use range and zapped Sludge back, knocking him about 50 yards. He lifted Transmission above the living dead to protect him but exposed himself to ranged hits. Zombies jumped at Transmission and missed but Stormwing had to drop him. Transmission took a few blows from the black and green zombies before realizing he could move faster. back off and shoot. Poor Sparrow was blasted repeatably and threw Purple helmet's zombie into the hypersolvent but too little too late, he was down and dieing. The flame caster and Sludge hunted Stormwing While the hand to hand ones lumbered after Transmission who battered got the hang of keeping just out of the way.

Transmission and Stormwing now fighting well started to win. Kept webbing zombies to ground while Stormwing force bolted them. At a crucial moment the Purple Helmet was webbed and spent all his effort to escape. Shadowstrike's zombie wandered confused in circles trying to reach heroes while Emerald Mantis was trapped and the growing pool of hyper solvent began to eat him. Stormwing bolted Sludge into Flamesong hurting both and Sludge fled the battle but was taken down by another bolt. Flamesong freed one foot with a blast, then another from the web then finished off Stormwing with fire. Strangely the zombie Purple Helmet healed Sparrow saving him as zombies ordered to capture alive. Transmission was zapped by flame and blacked out.

Guys awoke in cylinders with villains cackling. Zombie Shadowstrike held the caduceus which was agitating the silver cylinder next to the similar ones thew were trapped in. As fluid began filling the the heroes tubes, Sludge explained his plan to release zombie gas over industrial sector during the heaviest shift and to gas any heroes that came to stop them, Laughing about his victory he left them as a strange liquid began to fill the tubes. Purple helmet and Flamesong went with him leaving the hand to hand zombies in charge. Stormwing and sparrow were badly hurt requiring hospital care.

In Marvel villains earn Karma by putting heroes in deathtraps, gloating about plans and leaving them to die.

Stormwing was badly hurt, her power barely working and could not break the tube. Vile fluid in the tank was now up to knee high. Transmission spotted the tubes weak spot and directed Stormwing on what to do. His web gun was on the villains workbench. Stormwing managed to break her tube open and start to struggle out. As zombies came to investigate, fluid reached the other two tubes trapped heroes groins. Transmission saw the mercury tube boil near the caduceus and told his telekinetic pal. She threw the Shadowstrike zombie holding the caduceus into the tube breaking it.

The chrome fluid poured out and formed the missing hero Mercury. He took his staff back and hurled the zombie into a tank of rocket fuel then broke open Sparrows pod. Transmission gulped in extra air before fluid covered his face. Stormwing tried to pull some electrical wires in fuel spill but her brain spasmed and her power died. Mercury freed Transmission who went for his gun. While Stormwing helped Sparrow, Mercury taking Stormwings idea, tore up a fuel pump power lines and exploded half the underground base. Battered heroes exited via stairs that Mercury showed them and onto the factory floor above. He sealed the underground base and flooded it with freon gas. He healed the others with his wand.

Of course the super zombie thugs were blown into the storm drains. Mercury told sad story of how he was betrayed by Dr Acid (Sludge) and was put in tube. Transmission helped him repair the base which had machinery Mercury used to turn human. Then he could confront his family. He found by telepathy his brother had been hooked on drugs by his enemy Sludge. Mercury healed him and renewed his family bonds and recovered his wealth. Offered to aid Transmission and Stormwing but wary of being in a team again and needing to spend time with family and business. He had to go back to making his business lose money supporting a superhero on the side. Transmission looking at Mercury's tech concluded that it was seemingly bullshit. His code was a mix of alchemy and ancient Greek he could decrypt given time and his remarkable reasoning powers. Mercury told them all he was sent to Earth by his dad Zeus which others concluded must be crap. Still he was a nice guy.

Mercury mentioned his old pal Terra, a four armed powerhouse with earth shifting powers who nowadays just ruled the street he was born on in the ghetto with his street gang. He kept all other gangs and drug dealers out and lived like  king.

A fun session they had many tense moments in battle. Players having never lost a fight were unsure as to what would happen if the villains won. Starting to get idea game is not about killing to win. Was just a fill game in club but proving very flexible with gamers popping in and out. I can see strange things happening in months to come. History of other missing and fallen heroes will be an ongoing theme as River City has a way of dragging many a paladin into its corrupt mess.

Exile log: How many levels to the surface world

So got my weekday gamers together and set a new time and game. Decided to renew my 2nd lv DnD dungeon crawl into a as ongoing game. Will have more players later.

For now have a halfling who is adept at throwing rocks and bashing peple by surprise with this magic rock you shhould look at.  Looking for his mum and dad (mum gone a month dad for years, both hid him from a cult who believe his tatoos will open a gate). Mum got him face shifted by a creepy flesh wizard to keep cult away.

Dark elf druid who left home scorned by a lover, with only his pony size riding spider. Banished from home he seeks adventure and power possibly so he can spurn her back later. Has medalion that shots a magic missie but needs human sacrifice to recharge. As he is specialist with comp bow only uses when he has to hit. I told him the Elf secret that the king and queen of the light elves and dark elves are the same gods with different faces.

So a halfling managed to ditch his dwarf buddies and make a bolt for the surface with his human thief wannabe Rene and girl he rescued who minds his baby darkstalker. Has recruited a spider riding dark elf with druidic spells and followed the gnome map to a mighty tower rising from the floor to the 100 foot high ceiling and beyond. A fabled elevator to the bottom of the wizard school. Opened the secret door to by pass the coded wizard only door and into the elevator. Rode past level 8 and got out level 7.

Headed for the stairs to head up and passed through cavern area where students were tested. Attacked some orcs but elf stopped fight and recruited orcs who wanted out.scarecrows pored out from alcoves to attack the intruders. Came through tunnel with scare crows ad party had a running battle where orcs all fell. Elf butchered them and party went up to level six. This level was for 1st to 4th blur robes and party bashed some students and stole some robes and looked around the school a bit.  Had a nap in dorms and beat up one guy for asking questions and tied him up. In one fight whole party got put to sleep except halfling who's "magic" rock finished them off. Ate porridge in cafeteria and sat an exam. Both halfling and elf got pass grades on an exam by copying off person next to them.

Level 5 was full of white robe apprentices the party mistreated like it was Tom Browns School Days. Managed to con way past guards without a hall pass and onto level 4. At one point stumbled into a throne room of a wizard scholar and ran, were chased by orc guards  but hid in laundry. Bolted on and up to level 3. Turned down potion tutorial as in a hurry and badly wounded and got to level 2. Elf proclaimed healing spells are probably useful. Tried to get past guard statues outside the library but failed questions. Beat up some students for answer and passwords and went in. Started a fire and fled promptly. Lots of school admin this level.

1st level is where promising students are tested. Walked in on martial exercise and suspicious master acused them of not being students. Party pulled out weapons which kinda proved it and talked new students into joining them fight the master (it a secret test). Killed master and took a rare necromancer scroll which will come up in later sessions. Party fled killing more orc guards and ran all the way to village, passing the great tomb entrance that halfling passed through level five months ago. Proceeded to annoy villages and were forced to leave.

Some games I run are just murder hobo hackquests and not meant to be great campaigns. So this is unusual to have party grow from a tangent of that. I used my own tables for backgrounds which has helped with between adventure/carousing tables on blogger to give characters interesting backgrounds like the halfling. Will try more story adventures with plots over crawls or at least missions in the crawls that make emptying every room a dangerous waste of time.

Having a whole school of wizards hate you kinda bad start to adventuring career.

I was writing a d100 thresholds but it went stillborn

Psychonlog: Citadel War with Bewitched Goatman

Heroes in the witchhunters citadel meet the council and all watched the fire of a distant village, with cavorting beastmen dancing and chanting. Considered repairing teleporter array, finding mercenaries or trying to manage scientists to cure the influence of the witch water bioplasm under the earth. Party told leaders about the about rock men abhuman builders of the city who were frozen in the secret vaults below. Council agreed to revive them as they had 1930 tech and APC's versus witchunters using Cromwell tech as a model.  Robot party member was proving to be awesome and spoke in character well.

Rock men revived and leaders met. Rockmen claim they can restore city and improve efficiency. They began awakening military vehicles with digging blades made trench works and set themselves in watch over the road. Trenches were set with bombs and slums cleared. Terrorist witch tainted tried to blow up the teleporter that the rock men were fixing and party stole explosives. Casting sleep on guys climbing 40 foot up was sad but effective. A politician who spoke against integration tried to kill rock men diplomats with a bomb vest.

Bored Ice man claimed he could call ice elementals to aid them as he had spoken to some local snowmen. Party followed while they travelled to distant mountans and fought deco ice androids guarding the glacier. Inside battled a frost salamander then Iceman called his god Cryonax to aid him. The evil lord of cold gave him a magic snowflake, as he hoped to destroy the witch water too. A rival to his frozen evil - the witch water fears freezing too. All marched back to citadel and now housed in uptown.

Heroes gathered homeless and poor who lived on city surface to march to the caves and bunker they seized earlier. On the way to safety the goatmen witch army came closer and the Iceman used his snowflake to call a bunch of 4HD Ice elementals. Slowed the army and got poor to safetey.

Beastmen marched into the gauntlet of trenches and cannon fire. Party watched rear of monsters to see leaders and party attacked, pouring spells, dropped explosives on leaders including a swollen headed high humanoid priest. Blast killed most of guards but sleep spells and  electric arcs and robot drill bit hands finished the rest. Shazza the 1/2 icewoman sidekick was almost killed but saved. Evil army routed with 70% losses and party given magic gifts by witch hunters and tech from the rock men. Debates as how to stop witch water with refined more medical versions means not just torture. Rulers offers to teleport party to other lands for the city as diplomats.  Iceman has been carousing and preaching to all about how Cryonax saved the needy and now the poor have their own religion. Awww! A chaotic evil ice gorilla with tentacles is sure to help the poor cope with their problems.

I will run more of this, Im just juggling my games at moment to put cthulhu vikings a go. Will let players decide what will play on wed game. Been play testing Space setting hope players get to have a fight and not be too wary. Im impressed party stayed so long in one hex and might stay in service of citadel lords.
