d100 Necromancer Relics

I'm Chris Tamm, I started playing dnd and fighting fantasy in 83 and wa involved in several 80s gaming clubs. Played Basic Roleplaying Game BRP system
most consistently  (Stormbringer, Call of Cthulhu, RunQuest, Ringworld) and TSR's Marvel Superheroes. And a smattering of warhammer fantasy and 40k rpg, MERP, GURPS, Gammaworld 2nd Ed, Champions and Paladium. After 20 year break from DnD in recent years has been running oldschool 1980 BX and Cyclopedia editions of DnD with a few ideas from editions and oldschool clones. Experimental with settings and traditional DnD tropes and genre with science fantasy settings like Planet Psychon. Mostly play at Exiles game club. More stuff by me at elfmaidsandoctopi.blogspot.com

Cthulhu Metropolis
Cthulhu mashes with Metropolis
From a fevered late night silent film night, Call of Cthulhu mashes with Metropolis into a deco punk alternate future. Characters are caught up in events of both films/books in the Dreamlands of HP Lovecraft and Thea Von Harbou.
It is the year 2026 and the city of metropolis dominated the world economy and houses 52 million persons. For the rich – a designer deco paradise of urban engineering. Where the rich live lives of pleasure the workers dwell in squalid subterranean factories. At its center is New Babylon – the control center where the head of the metropolis bank monitors everything - from global money markets to the thunderous work floors of the great machine beneath the city.

Investigators are on the trail of Cthulhu's cult in Metropolis as civil unrest swells around them. A selection of starting characters of various social status will be available.
Using Call of Cthulhu 6th edition Rules.

Long Stairs DnD

Modern special forces vs 80s Gygaxian menagerie
Since the fifties special forces of several nations have been entering temporary wormholes to the Dungeon Dimension. Today there are permanent gates in Maralinga and three military bases on the other side. The dungeon is a self aware endless trap and monster filled hellhole that responds to intruders and contaminates them. Teams of soldiers with scientists and technical specialists seek evidence of alien methadology (magic) and biological specimens (monsters) and the secret gateway project could always use more treasure.

Players start with 4 characters and get to shoot at classic era DnD monsters with modern automatic weapons. This scenario takes place with several scenes starting from deployment and your first firefight with the Gygaxian ecology. Based on the thread in rpg.net forum, a shared world created in the form of interdepartmental e-mails from the alternate universe.

Using a variant of 1980 TSR BX DnD

Quest to the Surface Kingdom
Octopus Princess Magical Adventure
Players are adorable octopi princesses and princes with magical powers and like mermaid friends and they have lots of treasure and friends and stuff. The magical pearl of the western ocean has been lost while playing with it and now its up to a team of magical octopi to visit the surface and to negotiate the return of this important artifact. The humans will find you adorable and return your treasure totally fo' sure right?

Prep for BRP Viking Horror Fantasy Game

This game will be a sequel to my popular German 1490 Cthulhu game and will be very similar. I Used Call of Cthulhu, Cthulhu Dark Ages and the Avalon Hill Runequest and the Viking box set that went with that. Also the classic PC game from Microprose 1992 (available on GOG.com. Went for about six months till apocalypse averted as characters had become a cult of fanatic profiteering witch hunters with a secret working poor pagan faction.

I could still run a session but I think games of this duration suit club better than say my high level DnD. For sake of club setting hope for at least 3 regular players and up to a regular dozen drop ins. Initial characters will get personal plots, bloodlines quests and other stuff.

I got  Anyway was thinking about vikings stuff lots then saw amazing TV series which can only help to make vikings sexier. Im a big fan even though their livestock is regionally incorrect (need those satanic woolly viking black goats with two sets of horns).

Goal of game is to frame about 5 core viking cthulhu scenarios i have. In between them will be more typical spooky viking stuff and psuedohistorical scumbaggery. Every session will be at least one year game time with some other Pendragon RPG Elements. Every session your family and and horse make a save or die roll. Drop in player characters can mostly be vikings and a few foreign low status slaves, warriors or traders.

Early Years will be in a poor stony isolated Norway
Eventually will get into proper viking stuff
Robbing a monastary or two, its the thing to do
Explore and colonise Greenland, Iceland and America
Explore forbidden magic lands and beyond Midguard to the 9 worlds

Magic stuff? Everyone will get some sort of magic skills
cthulh mythos magic mostly used by sanity damaged cultists
cthulhu dark ages book witchcraft system will be around
RQ3 spirit and divine magic work great with vikings box set has nice starting location
Mythic Iceland BRP has a great system of divine allegiances and a interesting luck roll system
Mythic Iceland BRP basic magic skills - second sight, prophecy, runes
I'm adding magic skills Shapeshifting (per species) Rage
If someone wanted to be a Skald id use song magic in BRP Alexander game

Good RPG Books I Used

Interestingly all have different approaches to magic and even viking weapons. Mongoose one declared no room for runepriests zapping giants an ships in RQ. Who would want to do that in a game? Comes off silly and dictatorial.

RQ3 Vikings Avalon hill box set, nice and dry and gritty with increasing weird magic and the RQ thing of everyone uses magic like Joeseph Cambell said. A viking priest might not intend to travel much but a runelord/champion/acolyte would be pretty powerful and awesome and well deserved. RQ has a very anthopological-mythological perspective with different assumptions about magic and fighting to DnD. Has lotsa pregen troops for in game use of varied ability.

So called Mongoose Runeguest II Vikings book i got for a buck online. It has some nice stuff and I liked the monster stats and text being separated and the time line and the d100 background table, pages of well done out lists like the pages of names - lots for my players here. Adventure ideas I like too.

BRP Mytghic Iceland is shaping up to be one of my fave ever RPG books. I will be using it alot.

Cthulhu Stuff I have yet to go through the various monographs I have got. Dark ages will work for Western Europe. Some Pendragon campaign stuff for farm prosperity. I could probably write some viking tables myself but some good stuff here. The Pendragon Saxon and Viking stuff might be handy.

AD&D 2nd Ed Viking book I really liked. TSR went for new kinds of game realism and suddenly every setting got flooded with mash up history. The good thing about history games is they teach everyone something about history versus the McBigGameCo fantasy which is only of interest or use to other fans.

I Like History Games and I like the historical DnD green cover books. The extra Viking classes were pretty good versions I recall. Had some interesting magic hoohah, background tables and was one of the last really worth it things before I stopped playing DnD for 20 years. Sad all versions of RQ viking books since ignored their past because this is a very good box set with months worth of play. What a waste to not reprint it or expand and improve on it.

GURPS Vikings, I love all these a few pages like viking wages always handy. Its been good to read different books but the GURPS 3rd ed line I had 30+ books of stuff and some I hung on to till recently. I had GURPS V1-3 then have not really kept up much. The traveller stuff was good too. The gurps spin on character information and using a core of history with lots of choices and genre mash up ideas like space vikings.  Anyway this book is a good take on a wide range of viking games.

Iron Crown did a Viking book for their system and compatible with Hero system. Actually well designed, dense and full of tables and useful stuff. Well presented facts about family, economy tables for your farm and other encounter tables.

I have armload of sagas and history and archaeology books and I still feel wary of making mistakes in any psuedo history games. Must remember its only a simulation for fun but i get to fill my head with some non trademark knowledge that has some use outside of gaming. Even if its just to impress Scandinavian Backpackers.

Anyway will finalise my character sheet and pc generation soon

Feel free to recommend anything I haven't mentioned in comments box

d100 Kaiju monster apocalypses

Kaiju good for planet Psychon or  super heroes or whatever. I'm a bit inspired by Marvel Monster era comics.

A Kaiju isn't just a friggin huge thing to kill, they should be able to cope with deadliest gammaworld weapons. They could also be a dungeon waiting to happen. Rescue the crown from the kaiju tummy and sake the rightful rulers? Ear canal of kaiju? Perhaps their mouth is a hellgate like in medieval art? Best avoid being eaten in all cases.

Any suggestions for d100 Pocket monsters in a similar format in comments -  i will put with your name in table

Remenbering may Gygaxian critters started as kaiju dolls and good DnD monster could just get a giant version. Cthulhu monsters are well represented also.

In a Kaiju story evidence of beast is often found, with increasing clues till a sighting. Usually an attack on a settlement follows with beast heading to greater urban centers and fighting a military force. Sometimes the monster carries parasite monsters, might battle or team up with other monsters or have scientists devise a super weapon. Aliens may meddle in kaiju affairs too, seeking to control, kidnap, eliminate or trap them out of the way. Kaiju mostly are dumb but can sort of communicate.

I ran a kaiju game of MARVEL with 100 foot tall monsters where players mostly played the human contacts till fight time when every player would pull out their monster. Set in world over run by monsters setting was very fun.

d100 Kaiju
1 Kaiser Siezure hairy dinosaur thing blasts with neural frequency pulses of light stunning others
2 Waku Tiki a huge stone monolith with hands and legs, grumpy but served by cultists and priestess
3 Radura a quadraped dino with spikes growing in back, can roll at high speed in a deadly sphere
4 Megasan huge robot warrior martial artist with rocket flight, has own intellect but has been controlled by others before
5 Gigadru a mighty radioactive reactor fueled t-rex type with atomic blast breathe able to shoot spacecraft down. Feels protective of earth and challenges other monsters
6 Garudar a supersonic giant bird can generate weather patterns and possibly will transport people
7 Biobor a blob of petrochemical and bioplastic gel. Engineered to clean ocean now a shambling toxic psuedo lifeform
8 Mighty Colossus is a necromancer made monster from thousands of corpses, it feeds on the dead from graveyards
9 Fungarigar a giant mushroom man who is kinda o and sometimes even funny, but he can still cause plagues, slime outbreaks and hallucinations

RQ6 Bundle of holding and my BRP Stuff

Rune Quest Stuff
http://bundleofholding.com/index/current

looking at RQ6 pack i got now - my edition is RQ1 and the Avalon Hill edition which started mid 80s then flowered in early 90s then folded. Most stuff was slick looking and i had every product. The much hated and some say worst gamer product ever - i found a favorite every game used book for pregens for most occasions. Also lots of ideas for custom monsters and Broo gangs and how magic used by NPCs. At start i only used divine. Then got spirit magic and became a expert player with it then a scientist from the group got sorcery and explained it to rest of us. Wasn't till I saw those 90s sourcebooks I saw more awesome abuses of sorcery.

Through 90s I ran 3 Babylonian games for several years, multiple of my own worlds, some Gloranthan classics (about a third of scenarios i own), some dark ages. BRP Ringworld based game from 80s into 90s (and im kinda re starting with a DnD based system).

RQ6 looks pretty good - tasteful and well layed out. A few things have which possibly why dropped Mongoose RQ and stuck to the old. I think will have to do my own BRP character sheet for games I am running
. My edition use dark age europe or glorantha which is a great world - new setting and adventures not as cool as old stuff which is mind blowing weird (Ralzekark of Dorastor, Griffon Island/Mountain). Looking at this I am motivated to get moving on my version on it.

There is also Legend from mongoose which has art that is well done but i find kinda the wrong feel - non gritty history and a bit too sexy for its own good. Marked decline and so called rq2 line seemed all rushed.

I like osprey military books more than most game art for RQ as it is so gritty. Open quest is another alt versions that all have heir strengths - simpler than I want but might have some ideas and gems inside. One called magic world which Im tempted by but a few things bugged me (Typos which a dyslexic like me can see flipping in a store and I have all old games art and most of rules ripped from). BRP (basic role playing system) has many versions including Cthulhu.

Wacky variable armour seems more appealing now but i will think about
detailed hits or damage threshold score and crit tables?
I might go a bit more light stormbringer flavour for my setting and go gritty for historic babylon
I could use more heroic simple system for mythic age of early Sumeria and add complexity as I work through eras - Akkad - Babylon - Assyria?

I have hopefully got a source for Worlds of Wonder - Chaosiums universal system with a basic character book and a mix of super world fantasy world and space world genre books.

I'm tempted by:
no fatigue points
no strike ranks but multiple actions doesn't offend me but might be too horribly complex - id rather have sword master can split attack
Skill attribute bonuses more like ringworld less like avalon hill version
Weapon group thing going now is too easy - but Ringworld type groups could be interesting
And old school pole arm damages please (id rather a naginata than a katana)
I used a deck of cards as a booster system but using playing cards - starting gifts and in-session ones
stun and lethal damage types like gangbusters and top secret/SI
Recoil rules for guns instead of shots per round - I love BRP automatic fire
1 second combat rounds
a stat derived movement score

My BRP Cyberpunk game (99% lite on corporate missions where you get betrayed every game)
Id like to run 1st edition Stormbringer Game some time to make modern kids respect oldschool evil. Elric would so swat Cthulhu with his soul draining sword.

Babylon BRP Game to work on later this year. And I could easily do some of my own setting
Cthulhu Vikings Will get first treatment and i should crack shortly

My SF game pretty awesome - I could do various eras but I chose to run my Spaceships & Spacemen inspired version of my DnD which I am testing now and suits current needs for rules.

But that Japanese Edition of RQ looks amazing

If your new to RQ this is a good time to try it as is a classic and my prejudice comes from 30 years of enjoyment. Just go buy it. I promise to read all thoughroughly

This is edition I was a player in the most.
