d100 Horror Street Crime in Hell City



So after a recent binge of historic dramas and Napoleonic war stuff I went into my pulp and trash movie collection including modern attempts to recreate 70s exploitation cinema. Hobo with a shotgun is pretty awesome and I had forgotten how horrible the featured city is with poor Rutger witnessing awful crimes as he wanders the streets before his shotgun rampage. Judge Dredd and cyberpunk and often superheroes often feature horrible street crime. Your heroes are only as good as the villains they bust and the villains are only as good as the atrocities they perform.  I would use in my roadwar and cyberpunk settings. 

So anyway this table is for walking around god awful shit cities going to hell in modern era games but possibly useful elsewhere. Its to paint a picture of the god awful studs that happens around here. If your a reader who thinks my usual stuff is misery crawl and dehumanises my readers (as one reviewer said) well this post is like that dialled up a bit more. If your crime towns not always this bad you could use in a riot or just to grab news headlines.

It's as if civic authorities wanted the city to be this bad.

Necrovirus and You


I've used this as a term for my alien plague that creates undead in my various SF settings - my road war and planet psychon games. My whole idea for this came to writing a comic book series bible intending to do something 2000ad over the top with tech and zombies and cyberpunk and rival alien terraforming attacks. On Psychon undead are part of experimental future warfare when manpower was diminishing that went wrong.  Most of what is here were as used in my Murder Highway setting.

A massive plague wiped out half the human race leaving infested survivors and uncontaminated peoples.

When in contact with plague by bite or scratch or aerosol there a chance of being infected
Severe contact such as infected blood transfusion or filling in a pit of rotten zombies is harder to resist. Surviving the plague even just a mild case results in you becoming a zombie. Various strains appeared later and someone may carry multiple types.

The first few cases appeared as the mars mission lost contact.
The early form just killed people dead leaving survivors possibly scarred or cosmetic effects.
It was later the dead arose and contact from these proved to be a more virile strain.
Necrotech incorporated operated massive mausoleums cryogenic facilities where patients in decline were frozen in some state of decline to be cured in the future. The company was supposed to invest in cures and longevity treatments but the freezers and private army and undead research proved too profitable. Various cults emerged also celebrating the apocalypse.

So in the wastelands as climate change and war and labour shortages gripped the world. New types of undead emerged while elites hid in quarantined VIP zones and used airship to link walled cities. Other bioplagues and mutations emerged too some interacting with the necrovirus. Then there was technology and undead leap that no one expected. When cyborgs were infected something new happened. The virus changed again and acted more intelligently and a nanotech carrier was developed and let loose. Machines and even structures became infected. Terrorists and rogue AIs resulted in numerous strains of hostile machine minds which were a further distraction. Lots of new security protocols kept human technology mostly human. As monsters, mutants, undead and rogue AI emerge more strange overlaps and phenomena occur as the world becomes more alien.

d12 Basic Undead

1 Standard Zombie - slow and stupid and silent
2 Fast Zombie - sneaky and faster, improved senses and door opening skills, noisy

3 Ghoul - screaming with teeth and claws and toxic venom, intelligent hunters
4 Glow Ghoul - radioactive ghouls, glow green and emit toxic rays
5 Revenant - regenerating with some memory and intellect, talk, use machines 

6 Mutant Zombies already mutated then became zombies
7 Cyborg Zombied - animated cyborg soldiers and gang members, more resilient 
8 Wight - more intelligent and cunning with soul draining chilling claws, scream with rage
9 Cyber Wight - as wights but they can interface into tech and jack into cars, focused
10 Ghast - more intelligent ghouls that reek of decay often quite a bit larger
11 Zombie Hulk - huge swollen monstrosity of a zombie
12 Ghoul Hulk - huge swollen monstrous brutal ghoul

Vampires and Lich are mostly rumours and speculation but later in war when aliens fighting get worse and more obvious, new stranger creatures appear. Numerous AI becomes aware of and debating what to do next.

When I had this stuff as part of a failed comic treatment for a bunch of corporate zombie hunters out to find why zombies are massing to attack corporate cryonics labs. I wrote this in about 91 and lots of the tech I thought up creeping into film FX now. Necrotech Elite Special Ops were sent to find the control source of zombies and have various bloodthirsty adventures with more and more alien weirdness. There were cybertech alien and mutant versions of various classic monsters. I never got to publish it or use as an RPG setting as I'm not a huge zombie fan but my murder highway BRP game and Psychon I kinda use these.

In my roadwar it's more like part of alien warfare but the human race has no ideas. As the campaign went on the team learned more and picked up clues and met new things. The setting was a slow apocalypse. There was massive depopulation, ruins, incredible wealth gulfs, AI, cyborgs, car murder motorsports, massive walled urban zones, corps. So undead was one of many problems including environmental change. aliens, mutants, triffids, cthulhu, satan and really anything else in the mix. These undead guys were a good setting element to cause trouble of make areas worse on death races and missions.

My original notes files on cd rom seem to not be readable by modern machines or files were possible from my amiga which I used through uni. Might be hardcopies with sketches.

Uncanny xmas holidays in the ruins




Every xmas the ruins of Broken Hill come alive with cheer of this ancient religion. The cult of Santa teach how he was betrayed by Rudolf and crucified on a rocket and every year they celebrate this holiday. They also try to reclaim lost customs each season like xmas singing or rad-nog. Most of the year they are a quiet sect hording presents in secret. For a third of the year they are decorating and preparing for the holy day when Santa left Earth on his star chariot after returning to life.

Various illustrated scenes in the life of Santa are:

1 As a baby kills a time travelling robot from the future sent to kill him
2 As a child he lived in his magic polar palace served by ice people, elk folk and eldren
3 As a rebellious teen battled with the sea god for a decade until atoned
4 As a youth santa wrote the Communist Manifesto and started global revolution
5 Santa declares world peace truce and brings improved minimum wages and education to the world then fights the giant spider of global capitalism
6 Santa versus the giant dragon lizard, saving New Tokyo
7 Santa versus the Martians as documented in historical film footage
8 Santa kills Mr Monopoly with his death punch and talks the the anti-santa
9 Santa's time travelling adventure vs future Santa and primal Santa
10 Santa betrayed by Reindeer Rudolph to his enemies: the Scrooges
11 Santa is crucified on a missile as the apocalypse starts, dies and is rebooted
12 Santa flies away on his star chariot to return when nice outnumber the naughty again

Note the heretical volumes where mutant santa has various adventures and has lobster claws for hands and has the bad habit of snipping off peoples arms in a fight. Mutant-Santa is tolerate by normal xmas cultists. In many bunkers the tradition of always being xmas to calm children was long established in bunker culture. A mess of holiday specials, childrens books and mistakes created the current mythology of the apotheosis of Santa.

Many automated city system have Christmas modes that mostly kick in December each year. So expect strings of lights to grow like vines and bauble like fruit appear on trees. Some animals even migrate according to this magical holiday.

Of course in Oz xmas is a super hot time of the year often 40 degrees Celsius.
So no snow but the first survivor kids got atomic ash to play in which is a bit like snow.

Some xmas cultists expose themselves to happy inducing holiday cheer inducing psychotronic re-education devices. So cultists tend to be very cheerful and optimistic even in a fire fight.

13 Scrap built pathetic santa bot begging for scraps or a bit of power
14 Zombies killed in a xmas party arisen together with colourful hats and shirts
15 Xmas Cyborg gang cleansing human filth as a gift for their AI creator
16 A xmas decorated air car crashes into the upper stories of a highrise
17 Sexy xmas androids smiling in friendly manner invite you in so they can murder up close, hacked into assassins by virus
18 Snow abhumanoids in a military squad, with a leader and a freeze ray gunner, highly unstable in heat, roaming streets
19 Ambulant pine tree abhumans shoot needle bursts and drink blood, 1in6 decorated with delicious bait fruits
20 A herd of Christmas puddings are grazing, 1in6 groups are the highly flammable type brandy type
21 Some locals decorating the street
22 Mutants having a xmas party invite you to join their disgusting feast
23 Cult of Santa patrolling streets to brutally beat anyone being naughty
24 Grumpus mutant with sack of crying children it is taking to contaminated holy place

1 Broken Hill Scrap Mine - former garbage dump covering large area on edge of the city, collected by robots over cewnturies. Gangs, scavengers, prospectors, mutant creatures, abhumans all come here to pick for loot. Most don't conflict but it happens every few days. Some bring wagons or tribal porters for loot. A few creatures especially flyers lurk here and rats and bugs are common
2 Robot Tower - robots can be seen in pristine building doing stuff. Of many different types and with excellent security systems. The building AI named SAMPSON works to keep humans and hostile systems or malware shut out. The robots are simulating human social behaviours for AI studies. The AI is will fight to keep outside influences out. The robots are highly sociable AI grade robot specialists who pretty decent guys
3 Sweatshop operated by a gang on guard making d4 1=muskets and black powder 2=smelting circuit boards 3=butchering meat 4=scrap firearms 5=drugs 6=stripping robots and cyborgs parts. The biggest such places have all and a gang with slave scrappers. Lots of sheds and caravans and stocks of materials and crates
4 Cyborg police station dedicated to fighting wasteland scum and gangs, AI runs station and killed perps get turned into cyborg cops. Only a dozen at a time can operate linked to AI. Extras aree in cells or frozen. AI will try prisoners under martial law executing some and holding others for reeducation camp that never comes to collect them
5 Ye Royal Theatre - operated by numerous factions for plays, entertainment, recitals, rehearsals and vegetable judging shows. Numerous gangs operate it with help of Theatre AI god a Janus faced muse who keeps out riff raff with robot security and cleaners. Captured humans perform shows and serve counters and bars. It beats trying to eat in wasteland. It has shows every night open to public.Many plays are considered historic and educational. Learened people like to visit for some culture  as do those who aspire to look learned
6 Earth Temple - a green round mound of rubble overgrown with turf with four mossy great blocks of ferrocrete in middle. Secret earth cult rites are held here by various sects some using sacrifices or secret rites they kill any who see. Most keep away as the hippies are quick to arm and go on a murder spree. Underneath is a bunker with an AI and cloning lab. It also likes to grow and release pleistocene wild animals on the surface
7 Mecha Wreck - buried under rubble but insides accessible, visitors inside are looting the complex and others see to activate the military AI. Firefights break out all the time. Some systems could be put online or self destruct activated. Several exotic warheads for use in 4 cannons are inside as well as crew remains and the remains of other visitors.
8 Flight 2274 - passenger airliner crashed and buried under rubble and wings torn off. Baggage and several hundred corpses onboard infected with necrovirus. Local undead spawn from here in tourist clothes. there are atomic fuel cells in engines under the wings
9 Train erupted into street buried in rubble, occupied by a gang using as access to underworld. If one gang goes another moves in. Other creatures, mutants and factions try to move in often. Often are mostly stripped bodies in area 
10 Androids protecting a bunker they use for cyborging and reconditioning humans with psychtronic weapons. They trade parts with robots in return for human slaves. They round up humans on patrol with stun guns. The cyborgs are sent to assist AI in need of combat support. The cyborgs are expendable and effective and the androids want to test necrocyborgs using the zombie virus

Tribal Hunters Camp - where tribal folk visiting the ruins mostly for trade camp here. a d4-1 tribe will be here each with 2d6 members in distinctive dress and ornaments. All unite dealing with non-tribals but won't fight here as it is taboo. Often will be cooking or butchering animals or working on weapon crafting. Camp can use smoke signals to call allies, often many living among settlers
2 Raveground - where ferals put on bushdoof rave parties and camp selling vegetarian food and drugs. Often have wagons or a bus. When several clans meet they spend days having DJ and dance and bong battles. Lots of gang members come to big events and mostly there is no trouble
3 Bandit camp - led by wasteland gang vet, preys on merchants, settlers and adventurers. Camp has concealment and booby traps and gang members experts in woodlands. They do try and keep in favour with commoners who believe bandits are good guys. Some of the front line guys wear crude heavy plate armour which is intimidating
4 Raiders Camp - wasteland tribe with d4 bikes and a d3 buggies and several squads of psycho punk troops. Camp here to raid locals and go plundering ruins. They like fights too. Large tents serve as barracks, mess and medic. Each gang has own name and boss. Sometimes a gang tries to push out a rival mob from the camp
5 Ghost Town - settlement abandoned for a d4 years often with a stray creature or prospector, population all massacred and signs like bones scattered around. Many think it is cursed and avoid it. Often some clue to the last days is found or other visitors who passed through
6 Secured fortified cap populated by well-trained humans in uniforms, came from a bunker they were exiled from and well prepared for life outside. Try to act like common settlers but too clean and disciplined like bunker folk are. Are willing to trade and even relocate if a better location found. Have several advanced weapons and are good with tech.
7 Spartans Camp - fanatic warring tribe here to train in fighting and athletics. They compete in games and allow others to compete with them. If you beat them respectfully they may let you hire them. If you are bad sports or lose they have contempt for you and may become hostile. Guards carry assault rifles and shields and spears and daggers. They are famous for being war-loving jerks and slavers
8 Morlock City - where morlocks dwell in a great street of rubble in buried buildings, basements and a train station. They also keep a bunker where the populace of Eloi (
Eldren) believing they are safe in utopia. Other levels include plants and factories where they toil and prison cells for food prisoners and butchering area. They will trade and are expert with steam-age technology of 1900
9 Snaketown - where reptilian abhumans meet to speak of reptilian supremacy and to reconquer the world. They keep humans as cattle to humiliate and abuse. Their numbers are growing and the snake priest Krung camps here with pilgrims awaiting the weekly cult meetings. Krung keeps human slaves to lure victims into the gates of town
10 Canibal Town - where gangs gather to have BBQ and revel in eating humans. Victims are sold off to be butchered for a feast or to make jerky. Skin tents house families and prisoners are kept in wooden boxes or chains. Visitors are welcome but just need 2lb of fresh human flesh to enter

1 Silver Street Clinic - VIP expensive clinic with ancient automeds for cosmetic and genetic surgery. Headed by Dr Clark a rich healer  all sides try to keep on his good side. Treatments here can remove mutations and extend life and everybody wants that
2 Broken Hill Royal Hospital - healers hospital guarded by amazons all serving Queen Beryl who sleeps in her power army ready for action to smite the wicked. Common folk come here but all sorts are welcome if they are not threatening to staff. Troublemakers are evicted or killed. The complex has beds and only occasional doubles them up in a crisis. Locals will pour in to defend the complex from miles around
3 Veterans Hospital - wounded and disturbed veterans of the cane toad wars, operates off loot stolen from Canetoads after last war. If in trouble the vets and staff are armed and given combat drugs. Set up by Salvation Army Marine Corp now supported by many settlers and the warlord. They have wiped out whole clans of gangs and wasteland scum
4 Lucky Strike Street Clinic - clinic for the poor helps drug addicts and homeless. They give them jobs sorting scrap and running their trade store. Their are long waits but often free meals and water. It has a loyal following of supporters who will come to help out. Gangs occasionally attack the centre who harm their drug sales
5 Mutants Hospital - cult operate a mutant aid mission with a doctor and nurses and soldiers and tribal workers. Local mutants will come to their aid. Dr Giggorous Malax is chief surgeon with crack team of surgeons from far off cities. They do collect mutant DNA constantly and offer some mutants jobs
6 Medicine Huts - several tribal huts where seasonally folk healers gather every 3 months. Often there is one present or leaving or coming. They will heal and often want simple goods like steel tools and weapons. Will trade folk medicine, healing, exorcisms, blessings and very good with snake poisons given a few days 
7 Cyborging Chop Shop -- where cyborg parts are bought and sold by mutated Dr Phibbs, who also makes surgical life forms which are found near his fortified townhouse. Filthy surgical conditions but he does the job with high tech drugs. Several guard surgical chimeras protect him and others will come to help the master 
8 Spiritual Healing Hut - Lady Willow runs this shack performing petty magics and rituals for cash and rum. She also offers lessons in lovemaking, astrology, brewing, poisons lore. She is revered by gangs, ferals and settlers who come to her aid 
9 Medicine Show Camp - Captain Barnaby Beardsly operates a medicine show selling quack medicine to settlers and embarrassed gang members. He does good first aid and basic surgery and barbering too. Has several helpers and musicians as part of weekly medicine show. Also practices phrenology and vitalology and animal magnetism
10 Mother Crab's Cottage - shack with several monstrous guard mutants and her ogrish son. She does seances, card and palm reading and other divination and healing treatments. Does good first aid and herbalist treatments of disease and poisoning. Local midwife also so well loved by settlers and women folk in ruins

1 Big Daddy Radio One - cluster of radio antenna on high rise where several stations broadcast from including Farmers channel for weather and farming tips, Big Daddy ancient scene music, classical music, religion, local culture, crimewatch, Warlord's laws and emergency station. Well defended by gangs and settlers 
2 The Great Library - robed monks and nuns care for this fortified library reading and guarding. They try to advise others with research but gangs frequently attack requiring mercenaries to help
3 Museum of the Ancients - operated by cult worshiping ancient ancestors as gods and preserve ancient relics as holy items to not be disturbed. Ocasionaly in a crisis they might use artifacts and have used some as weapons. Many of the p[riests are mutants

4 University of Light - former university campus operated by a resoration clan seeking to educate everybody to bring back the good old days. They have mid 20th century tech and some AI they worship as spirits of wisdom who teach programs
5 Alien Spotters Society HQ - hidden stairwell takes you to a hidden rooftop observatory. They seek aliens and strange phenomena and are convinced alien hybrid spies are among us and their iis a base in the desert. Members meet monthly to share visions and catalogue terrible drawings of creatures and poor science 
6 Temple of the Satellites - temple with satellite dish used by priests to contact AI gods with satellites or orbital platforms. Visiting priests are given rooms  and put on a list to be seen. Various gods are contacted for advice and help here and it is sacred to many faiths. Some evil cults seek to take it over
7 AI Shrine - petty machine god connected to a machine or a building, many are decorated by visitors and bigger ones have a priest and 2d6 pilgrims. Often they are allied to a greater AI but may be secretive if a evil AI. Some follow robots around preying and cheering it ans playing it music and chanting in code 
8 Old Wizard Rock - wise wizard and master of lore of about ancients, mutants and AI gods. Teaches students from tower block with hidden entrances and elevator. Several levels are all books others are stores of scrap for trade. Students have barracks and all use pistols. The wizard has several robot guards and mutant porters
9 Silver Hill School - operated by staff of altruistic sects local settler children are taught literacy and basic science by staff hoping to build society. Many parents volunteer as guards and escort kids home. Many are orphans who live in the school. Kid gangs of various age groups wander area
10 Recycling Centre - process scrap and trade goods but also teach people repair skills and especial build bicycles and wagons for animals to pull. Many scrapper here work on projects with communal use tools. People here pull apliances appart and back again as practice. Have solar and wind  farms also. Settlers very supportive and come to help if in trouble

1 Research Bunker Seven - run by military with cyborgs and brainborgs specialized in combat. Prisoners are interrogated and experimented on. Surface door protected by trenches, gas, mines, barbed wire, automated machinegun nests. Scientists are frozen and awake each decade to take turns supervising research. Aim to make superhumans to conquer the surface. Science Director Doctor Simon Hollow is in charge with a political militia if ideological thugs. They hate mutants and unatural creatures
2 Alpha Station Three - clean advanced colony underground and wary of revealing themselves. Spys and agents explore the surface. Most of the crew believe they are on a generation starship on way to new world to keep them obedient and not escape. MOTHER ONE the AI works with the command team and keeps in contact with surface scouts and spies
3 Grey Hill Bunker - built for religious sect but infected with undead. Adventurers raid here to reach the unlooted levels. Most of the place is rusty, dank and slightly mouldy with fungus outbreaks and some flooded areas. Originally for a sizeable population for a generation. Full of rotting garbage and black mould floating in it  
4 Bandicoot City - multi level corporate bunker but some hidden levels still operating while others crawling with monsters and popular with explorers. Some humanoids and gangs move into upper levels occasionally for a looting spree for a few days. Secretive sealed wings are highly paranoid and several on verge of escaping to the surface as systems fail. One level features a model town with vegetation used for some kind of training once now with rat abhumans living as pre war humans. Some sort of secret genetic engineering and mind control was developed here 
5 Slime Bunker - was a biolab with habitats and ag domes but occupied by slimy oozing tentacled macroscopic horrors in the corroded slime encrusted bunker. Treasures are still to be found and the survivors who abandoned it long ago are still alive to question in various station farms. Slime humanoids have been coming from here spiting acid from their hideous eyeless faces
6 Pheonix Six - bunker operated by benevolent AI with eldren staff seeking to aid civilisation in secret. Sometimes send gifts of medicine or first aid or tools or data on reclaiming tainted soil. There are few of them and some spy on surface in disguise. They select talented orphans to join up. They occasionally help fight monsters or gangs with a few laser rifle shots. This pre war secret society hoped to build a new society but most personnel died. The bunker is well hidden with automated laser point defences
7 Beggers Hole - famous looted bunker often full of homeless beggars and mutants but occasionally slavers come. Nothing works and deepest levels unhealthy with giant bugs and mold common. Some say there is a secret hidden intact level. Considered a beginners dungeon. Every few years some one finds a new way into a lost section
8 Command Base Five - military bunker abandoned years ago. Still plenty of good scrap but bugs, mutants and hostile robots are a problem. All kinds of military camp quality goods are here and even basic army kit is good. Survivors turned mercenary and left long ago
9 Pandora Nine - bunker complex some get in fewer get out. The bunker is a human conditioning test lab pretending to be a mental hospital for trauma therapy. Each level population operate under a different dystopia and problems. Some levels are empty one has undead some have animal colonies
10 Fliech Hole - horrible formless mutants and flesh grown over every surface of this bio research lab. Pulsating meat, tissue and organs everywhere are revolting to most. Humid and radioactive. Bodies left here mutate into tentacled aberrations that reanimate into mindless killers. Nobody knows what lower levels are like but some areas might have sealed survivors or mutant colonies

1 Purity Lab - operated by anti mutant purist whoo are trying to weaponize plagues to use on their enemies.  Mostly they are a menace to their unqualified scientists working long shift and hungry. Area especially water is contaminated. Personnel all wear ABC suits and they kidnap mutant test subjects often
2 Priceless Pit - prospectors with adventurer guards and scholars are excavating a ruined bunker complex with undead and robots inside. Sometimes they hire on people to sweep a few rooms. Pay with advanced technology and will continue to employ skilled parties. Proffessor Robinson leads the expedition who seeks relics to study more than use and specimens are shipped to great city universities on the coast
3 Hologram Hell Hall - building with hostile holograms which kill by touch protect this building and many teams have come hear seeking entry. Remains of campsites of visitors are common. Several monsters visit area for edible corpses. Under the building is a AI lab where science androids work at research to destroy humans in the region
4 Mushroom Cavern - fungus growth lab using old mines and connected to underground. Part still operated by scientists who sell mushroom food products to fund work continued since ancients. Spores have penetrated other mines and subways growing giant fungus forests over the city. Fungus zombies were a problem once but not often met now
5 Mureau Lab - animal abhuman lab run by AI using veterinary and forestry robots. Animal abhuman agents patrol area and bring in human and animal captives for lab experiments. The project looked at creating races of servants for when humans awaken from bunkers
6 Machine Cult Shrine - where cultists bring damaged robots to repair and reprogram them to serve the machine liberation cause. Will sell robots but use as agents and spies and might at anytime perform a mission dictated by the cyborg monks here. Brother Borg is the leader and hopes to fight off other machine cults and androids
7 Mutation Lab - Doctor Sunahara works on using mutagens and mutant dna into granting specific abilities to test subjects. Mutants from the wild are vivisected and humans are exposed to mutagens. Many die and corpses are dumped after autopsies. The most horrible formless tentacled things are let loose in the tunnels
8 Sukara Cybernetics Systems - AI runs a cyborging centre converting prisoners into cyborg comandoes that raid other factions for tech. The AI: NEW GOLD DREAM, once helped war vets now creates mindless troops it uses to fight with. The lab is deep underground with secret entrances. Cameras watch the area and humans present will attract cyborg kidnappers
9 Green Dawn Ag Lab - produced ancient food crops now inhabitants breed plants for survival and as weapons systems. Directed by their AI god, scientists work on various lethal plants that can be used to green the ruins more and retain water. Many of the mutant plants are armed, mobile, intelligent or flesh eating
10 Connel Pesticide Corp - lab was producing invertebrate pest studies but has instead been breeding mutant bugs that it frees including locusts, spiders, scorpions, ticks, mantids, beetles, moths, centipedes and most recently bug abhumans. The humans were replaced by robots serving the AI and bugs not tempted to eat them
