SF Timeline Notes

Had been wanting to work on some setting timelines again and had a play with my sf one a bit. Might surprise ppl that SF i prefer to fantasy mostly. I like fantasy for it's referencing to history and archaeology rather than high fantasy tropes of crystals and flying ships. 

So while crunching this I considered If I did a SF product I think space archaeology campaign would be what I would do as It is a theme not focused on yet is common in SF and even SF adventures. Old traveller black book had an ancient pyramid that I liked and the concept art of original alien film which was kind of used later. 

Have run using DnD, BRP and my old homebrew d100 system I used 84-89. It started inspired by Top Secret SI and Starfrontiers and evolved more towards BRP so I just changed to that. Ringworld RPG and GURPS probably a huge influence too. I have my setting notes but not many mechanic notes or the huge spell lists I made for the fantasy version.

I might try a spacial map to go with this to show early periods only a few hundred light-years across to being 

So some notes on this setting (I have played various past periods) 
  • Technology templates used by colony ships are standard like the way most of planet use metric. Some colonies have alternate tech and specializations they have developed that is associated with more advanced tech
  • Colonies were equipped with templates to limit them and keep them thralls to their homes
  • Various peoples of Sol (Martian, Venusian, Selinites, Jovian, Terran, Belter) were influences on early colonies 
  • Earliest colonies were isolated for up to a century and developed distinct culture and genotypes 
  • Sol is far away and forgotten. It withdrew from communication with an interdiction field and built a Dyson sphere. Centuries later it vanished, withdrawn into hyperspace. Many old peoples of Sol left the system before this. Sol is mostly a myth to most of the galaxy. The old core colonies are closed to less advanced visitors
  • Those aliens you see, most used to be human. Humanity is allied with starfish and cephalopods. Once Terra faked an alien race "Proximen" to keep colonies united. Real aliens are rare. Some are leftovers of ancients now mostly primitive
  • Ancients left bioweapons and machines and ruins that are a threat to explorers and security of the whole sectors. Quarantine planets are common
  • Humanity and allies control about 2/3 of the galaxy loosely. Together they prevent virulent swarm outbreaks and excesses of pocket empires. Many warlords feel the great civilisations are impotent uncaring as long as you keep low tech
  • There are individuals who have survived thousands of years in cryonics accidents or become synthetics or reconstructed from data by AIs
  • Although Sol is gone, many who departed It before the end and operated at Template3 came to aid the mass of humanity as crusaders who came to wage war on threats against humanity. The last of them died fighting Makkara host from another galaxy
  • Using most advanced tech attracts trouble from lotechs who want it or worse awaken the advanced remnants of ancient weapon systems

So when you get to name level and forced to attend court or if you just serve a member of the court and come as a follower of someone important there are lots of exciting things always happening. Some of these are opportunities to gain fame and influence for the person making a career among the nobility.

93 A monster has been roaming by night near court worrying many who frequent it
94 Blood drained corpses of servants were found in the court chambers
95 A secret cult has been making attempts to infiltrate and influence the court
96 Witches have been spreading menace across the countryside
97 A powerful wizard has threatened the kingdom from their forbidden lair
98 Location of an ancient tomb complex has exited many scholars
99 A haunted ruin from the history of the kingdom stirring alarming some in court
100 A wicked evil priest menacing the kingdom has an underground temple complex

Masks Nyarlathotep So Far...

So Almost done the New York chapter of the new edition of masks.

Like much of modern Chaosium it looks, good, is crammed pack and pretty high quality. Still the best company making RPG's to me (though dropped the ball a few years back). But it has lots of flaws. Im using fan made companion extra content and have found it helpful for fixing some flaws and expanding on ideas. I keep my second ed copy on hand because it has some great art and is often easier to find stuff and to work out what to focus on. Small print but density is not worst RPG crime but i often need to use glasses which is very rare for me.

I might be complaining a lot here but I do dream of buying more stuff and my wish list has over 20 old and new Chaosium products now, 2nd is a few TSR things I lost and want back. Ive complained about old vs new before so will avoid that trap. I guess trendy rules and possible simpler/less maths helps some ppl.

I never thought it was the best COC scenario. I always thought it Pulpy. Fungi From Yuggoth and Shadows of Yog Sothoth Ive run many times. Spawn of Azathoth I like and one of best case dreamlands adventure in a mythos plot. Normally I use dreamlands my own way not strictly cannon. Dunsanay opium frolics clash with Mythos too much. I always thought Masks was pulpier and the Game over editions became pulpier so i use 2nd Ed because it is meaner. A few good things in 7th ed but lots of stuff I would not bother with. I learned 3 systems in early 80s and used all my slots cos Im a brain damaged grogtard. Also Orient Express is terrible. I threw out most of the content from 1st edition but keep the railroad npc book close always.

Despite all this Im running Masks. Probably more like Lumley style than HPL or Pulp.
I see no problem with using tech available to criminals and in shops to kill real monsters.

Im finding it very over written and hard to find stuff

Half a page on a character you talk to in a bar.
Stats on character who is killed in the scene you meet them
Wish headings of section had NPC name instead of poetic headings
Im tempted to make my own flow chart with built in check list.
Sometimes only one player of 6 in room can read handouts.
They had white paper in ye old days. Not all paper was poor quality or sun damaged.
Sometimes repeats info many times in same scenario, even on same spread.
Miss 8 page scenario chapters in Shadows of Yog Sothoth.
Instead I get 32 pages instead making prep slower.
Tiny dark portraits that often are not helpful in book.
Pages on scenes that don't really help much.
Keep wishing next version fixes things.
Some of the added threads don't really gravitate the main story.
One chapter states local gun laws another does not - a format on counties might be good.
An "Atlas of Cthulhu" with local gun laws, police, health care, customs and stuff in a simple format might be nice.
They killed a villain never realising his significance but I guess they will eventually learn.
Some items with no warning destroy characters.
What if a character was driven mad with the vision mask and implored everyone to try it?
TPK is old hat TPM in COC is real. Total Party Madness.

Lots of loose ends in play so Im happy to have characters just kill some people with tommy guns or pay someone else to murder a bad guy. Happy they throw money at a lawyer get a mook out of death row so they can get on with meat of adventure. After killing cult and burning down HQ saving a mook seems a bit slow paced. A SAN reward might tempt them.

On the plus side some of these problems could be features to some.

I made a NPC live cos I liked her half page bio and thought it a waste to snuff her on first contact. She helped drive events on. I considered making her a love interest but the investigators are mostly damaged war vets and couldn't speak her language or too scruffy.

I realise some people need everything spelled out to give keeper lots of room and flexibility in case things come up but my players still ended up stepping outside the framework so I had to improvise any way or made my own tangents. If no amount of writing can prepare the GM maybe don't try. Encouraging improv and creativity is a dying art in all published big company works.

I was happy that the second New York session due to player absences only one player/character was on both games but the hand outs and me and that player filled them in well and the three previously missing players all said "wish I was there".

The companion adding details on snow in NYC 1925 helped lots to set mood.
I used the extra Mexico prequel which was great.
-beat crap out of fake drunk god
-all captured by well armed criminals with rifle skills they couldn't deal with
-a reminder "sane" humans are bad bad monsters

New Peru section was great despite above problems and players loved it.
This chapter took three sessions, was railroady but fun.
Except when they lost 90% of their stat points.
Being horribly crippled made a few go home after a fight in first city.
I like maiming or cursing characters rather than killing them.

Now I have London chapters and fan content to read.
Honestly it has reading requirements of a Uni subject with no credit.
Players might sail to London and I will try and use a Mauritainia scenario.
Or they will use Eihort's gate if they can spare the SAN.

So my campaign now on year three run since 1920 has been pretty fun.
Might discuss this later.

Mesopotaimia Image Dump 10



Long time since i did one but lotsa new stuff online now. Once again i cant really source this stuff or credit anyone sorry. Its a resource for students of history and gamers. RQ fans might enjoy too but i kinda preferred Lunars as Romans and the more Glorantha lazily rips from history the more id rather just do a historical setting. I could probably do another one some time. For some reason formatting this stuff is kinda painful on blogger.

Mostly Assyrian military then some court/urban stuff.

Another old Campain














This is from my early 90s RQ3 campaign. Each nation was menaced by a different evil god. The evil gods of four pantheons had united into a new pantheon and promoted a daemon to lead them as a new greater god. Each god had a favorite monster it used to weaken a nation. Heroes spent years traveling around circles of continent trying to warn everybody and even get the non evil gods to wake up and enter time again instead of living outside it in ignorance. It was pretty grim and at time I only used rune magic requiring POW sacrifices.

d100 Interzone Encounters for Murder Highway



Ooh got a long Roadwar game friday..... so new content from my to do list. This could be for a cyberpunk game too.

I am working on a compilation of all my roadwar and have some art but I have at least ten more sections. Xor is at stage where im refining and editing text and needs little new content.


Surrounding the great sprawling cities of Sydney and Melbourne are increasingly desolate wastelands. Around the walled cities are the Slumburbs. Remains of the old suburbs filled with mostly unemployed and criminal classes, Then there is the Interzone. A semi controlled space mostly between the electrified razor wire zombie fences and the huge concrete defensive walls protecting the real city. Inside the real city law is absolute and only those employed by corporations and their spoiled families are permitted. The CBD is a luxury paradise mall megaplex, a playground for the rich that death racers will seldom see unless they make the A-league. Air transport is prefered for most important goods by airship freighters or hypersonic aircraft launch from the urban zone, allowing the rich to never soil themselves or see the poor.

Interzone is more interesting. A chaotic hive of criminals, corporate agents and lawmen. A maze of cyclone wires, cargo containers, cables, warehouses and garbage. Where shifty deals and black ops are commonplace. Factories and common industrial workers are commonplace. The workers are expendable casuals many who live in the sprawling slums. Many technical staff live in tiny cargo crate apartments or factories dormitories. Managers live in the city. Many who live in the interzone in industrial facilities not allowed within city walls.

Most of the Interzone is inside superstructure of the walls. The sky is seldom seen. Metal girders, frames, metal walkways and stairs cover walls. Air and drain lids and metal staple ladders are common. Many spaces are poorly lit with areas public gather in are the best.

Many death races start from such areas. Garages and transport bays for cheap land transport are based within interzone. Bus depots, truck stops, parking garages, auto factories are all  based in the Interzone. Some rail lines especially coastal lines and underground trains still function and stations are operated from the Interzone also. Most rail lines in the wasteland have been destroyed by gangs and have been abandoned. These yards and abandoned factories within Interzone are full of gangs and unregulated persons. Occasionally rumours of plague carriers and zombies bring in the clean squads to kill everything but the inhabitants know where to hide.

Possibly there are ways under the walls in sub tunnels but they are dangerous, with bars, fans, toxic waste, steam and boiling water. Black market dealers can provide temporary false ID. Rumour has it gangs in the abandoned districts might help you for a fee. Corporations can provide temporary passes. If your rich enough or famous with a sponsor you might buy citizenship. Yoy could also lose citizenship if you are broke or contaminated.

The law operate several huge districts for highway patrols. Plainclothes secured compounds and seized goods take up acres of warehouse space. Customs operate their own district and who gets in and out. Private security corps also have compounds. The military operate forts with barracks and weapons to fight zombies and occasionally corporate security when tax evasion or emergency nationalisation of assets is required.

While crime and scams and fights do break out in the Interzone no participants want the ultimate force on hand to eliminate all combatants on hand. Elite armed forces, choppers with miniguns and even drones can be called in to end a fight. A few stray pistol shots might be ignored away from a secure point.

7 Residential - apartment blocks, shanty towns, homeless shelters, street sellers,
8 Law Enforcement - secure bunkers, compounds, barracks, motor pools, airfields, prisons
9 NoGo - fenced off areas with wrecked cars and buildings, law shoot intruders on sight
10 Abandoned - ruined rail yards, empty factories, burned buildings, garbage dumps,

1 Shopping - decaying shopping malls, rows of shops, produce markets, black markets
2 Parks - overgrown parks, with rusty playgrounds and feral children, gangs playing sport
3 Ruins - housing areas often burned and wrecked, crawling with feral gangs
4 Ghetto - densely populated apartments and houses, with additions built with garbage
5 Gangland - gang districts, often fortified and lawless, burning oil drums in street
6 Waged - housing for corporate workers who work in interzone factories
7 Boxtown - homeless humpies, shacks and shelters built from garbage for semi homeless
8 Sprawl - a expanding new highly dense antonymous slumbland independent of city
9 Public - ruined remains of community centres, hospitals, schools, gyms and other facilities
10 Agricultural - reclaimed as farm land with poly domes and crops, usually well guarded

Basic Interzone Breakdown
Choice Vehicles - Cars in interzone tend to be new models or refurbished old models and look clean and highly decorated. Scooters and bycycles common for working residents. Police vehichles like patrol cars, interceptors and APCs are common. Unkept filthy wastelander cars are refused entry frequently or admitted temporarily for repairs only
Vehicle Arms - many vehichles well armoured, machine guns and more advanced modern weapons available but in fact almost any weapon can be found in black market or corp or military compounds.
Weapons of choice - pistols are common arms among commoners as are knives. Mostly oficial lawmen or security use machine pistols or SMGs or bullpup assault rifles. Tear gas grenaides and other chem agents are frequently employed in riots or cleaning out abandoned areas
Food - more modern and international cusine is popular here compared to outsider slumbs. Very little food resembles anything natural food. Most poor eat soylent, algae and yeast based foods with added nutrients. Truckstop diners stock hamburgers and vat grown meat as may riggers reward a cross country haul with a big budget meal. Beer and boxed wine are popular and homebrew and still mad hard liquor popular. Better food is found outside the zone.
Tech - mostly clean, modern and working order but rundown increasingly in worker habs and abandoned areas
Dress - uniforms and overalls and high vis work wear are common. Helmets and work goggles, knee pads are common. Heavy protective coats common and bullet proof vests or flack armour common with lawmen. T-shirts and track suits are common casual wear. Fine fashion or feral wear stands out. Abandoned areas are increasingly feral.
Hair - short back and sides and shaved heads common with law makers and workers and lice outbreaks in worker housing make clean shaven an advantage. Lots of truckers and older engineers like big beards. Trendy hair or gang cuts stands out. Ferals in the abandoned areas increasingly punk or with dreadlocks
Footwear - industrial work boots and sneakers mostly
