Xor Revisionism and Chaos

Xor was a lot of fun to create and I thank interest from various parties and contributions. Im going to recap everything done so far, add some rants and make final call out for ideas, advice, requests and contributions before I edit into a booklet. Will include the flesh cube revised and complete, a great meat tower and a section of flesh caves. Possibly a few sample settlements too. A wonder table might be nice too.
Chaos and Law have a interest in Xor. For Law Xor represents natural logic of organic growth based on set princaples. For Chaos Xor is raw materials, rampant fecundity and cancerous expansionism. Chaos demons invade because they hope to carry Xor to the Abyss where a victorious demon lord will turn Xor into a demonic plane of torment. Law wants to stop this but does not try as hard as one might think. Is Xor too imperfect, a lost cause or even some kind of honeypot trap for demonkind?
Demons run about in Xor and try to subvert systems and communities to chaos. Law at best sends some champions or adventurers to clean up the mess to little too late. Remnants of the old ones can be found in Xor. Is Xor a old one or elder god or a product of elder magic and science? Or did Xor arise from a single cell gone mad somewhere? I wish I had seen this earlier. I think a series of spells or possibly skill to manipulate xorian nerve clusters and chemical receptors. I Envisaged theives as experts who needed skills to pick locks on Xor doors. I think spells and cult skills help every class have own Xorian secrets like fighters get secrets of caring for and using living weapons and armour. Possibly doing a level up on Xor with local trainers would help aclimatize yourself to Xor tech and secrets. A friend studying physiology suggested a electrical nervous dungeon level. Also mentioned a vagrant nerve that moves around body and controls digestive tract.

They are often called in for help if the problem is bad enough because they dont lleave and bring new taxes. Some say they infiltrate militias and armies then subvert them to the conquerors

These sailors on the seas of phlegm or spittle or sweat or tears travel water ways of Xor. Rafts of bone and skin canoes are common in shallows and large pontoon canoes a hundred feet long are good for longer journeys. Such craft can be carried overland. Inflatable skin bladder boats are good to. Only the biggest seas have full ships which are rare. Exploring the inside of Xor often requires boats and the seamen have dealings with strange races of the depths

Gladiators are popular athletes who kill for entertainment. Animals or beasts are fair game and many gladiators are slaves. Some win freedom and begin to train their own slaves.

Xor Religion and Magic
A final point I need to deal with before I just settle down to my Xor manuscript (mostly need spells and monsters revised) is religion on Xor. For characters and for communities. I don't necessarily want to stick to the conventions of old or new dnd or LOTFP. Plenty of these sects could serve more than the basic classes. I will think about non human Xor cults a bit for later. Dark Albion Chaos cults might work too.

Outsiders bring there own gods and beliefs up the the GM. Usually outsider religion is that of a world Xor is intruding on. In games I ran England 1642 explorers brought Roman Catholicism, Puritanism, Church of England, Satanism, Witchcraft and Scots Presbyterianism to Xor. You could have outsider bring any historical or fantasy religion to Xor. Some of these end up being taught to locals and surviving. Within a few generations they mutate into something new. Things unfamiliar to Xor might be replaced to local variations. Clothing and weapons might be replaced first. Metal and wood on Xor are alien. Clothing on Xor is coarse and woven from hair or made from leather. Bone weapons with teeth for edges attatched with gut and sinew are standard. A god on a wooden cross would bee weird to Xorians. For missionaries this is part of the challenge. Less literate religion like shamanism or animism or ancestor worship is engulfed into native Xor religion much faster, even within a single religion. You could include any religion from history or fantasy setting. You could modify them into a weird xorian hybrid faith.
Elemental cults are followers on classical alchemical elements sourced from the primal elemental planes. On Xor they are alien powers and not part of the native philosophical viewpoint. Most Xorians can only comprehend earth as dung or rotten organic matter heaps. To Xorians the elements are parts of Xor or byproducts not the constituents. Elementalists might be clerical priests or wizards. They might cooperate with other elements or be rivals. Elementals seek more influence and worship. Cultists seek power and influence over the world. Most Elements are fire, earth, water or air but exotic hybrid elements like vapour, ice, lightning, crystal, darkness are less common but also exist.
Necromancy on Xor is a aberration. Most Xorians are repulsed by undeath, death and decay and see it as a breakdown of Xorian nature and a part of disorder and chaos. The fact some demons are utilizers of undead and death magic makes necromancers even less popular. Xorian magic of flesh, blood, bone and animus are seen as tolerable. Outsider necromancers are fascinated by Xorian magic and keen to steal it's secrets. Necromancy cults can be scholarly wizard sects or priestly death cults.
Demonic Chaos is one of the major problems on Xor and ranges from blatant obvious invasions of demons to cultist secret incursions spreading corruption and confusion. Demons seek to use Xor to create a new demonic plane to span legions to conquer and destroy the multiverse. Cultists seek to aid demons to gain wishes, power, revenge or just desperation. Some chaos cults don't realize the full implications of their actions. Others seek wishes or power. Some realize that demons intend to abuse them and ruin the world but seek to enter the demonic ranks on the base level. To be reborn as lesser peons and work their way through luck or merit to greater ranks. Demonic chaos cults can be priestly clerics or wizardly.
Spirit Cults are worshipers of spirits who negotiate with many everyday supernatural beings. They may have power but not as all powerful as gods. Spirits have hierarchies and some are royal and leaders over lesser spirits. Spirits surround everyone invisibly in the spirit world. Xor is the world spirit and sometimes upsets great spirits of other worlds. Spirits once walked the waking world more often and are ancestors of many tribes. Some spirit cult clans forbid relations with certain spirits. Spirits no not require great sacrifice or temples but they dont object to them either. Many cultists have shrines in their houses and bury ancestors beneath their floors or even eat fragments of them in rituals. Spirits are less jealous and clusters of spirit shrines might be located together. Shamen, priests and wizards might all deal with spirits in different ways.
Templars of Xor are a martial order of clerics who raise crusaders to invade areas
Hospitallers of Xor are a order who provide medical care to the faithful and innocent of Xor. They also act as military medics for crusaders and demon fighters. They are well liked and set up clinic shrines and hospital temples far and wide. They also protect the weak and sick and do take up arms and armour against those who prey on them. They don't often start fights but will hunt and kill dabblers in the necromantic arts.
Inquisitors of Xor seek enemies of Xor especially from outsiders. Some lead angry mobs, some work in military units some work in disguise all trying to root out secret cults and alien cults. They are sometimes mistaken and overzealous but the veteran ones have magical means to find the truth. Mixed feelings about the inquisitors exist because of their over zealous history. Despite this evil reputation they do stamp out some demonic and troublesome cults. Inquisitors may fight and many orders are long rivals. Cthulhu cults might be a good alternative to demons. Some petty gods might be on Xor too.
Children of Xor are a common cult of peaceful worshipers who serve and protect the common folk. Found in villages and small communities and try to let them live in harmony with mighty Xor. They will fight in self defence or to protect the innocent but will try to resolve problems with talk or running away if possible.
Hierophants of Xor are philosophers who seek to understand Xor with study. They
Mystics of Xor are monastic order mostly monks, nuns or clerics who dwell in fortified towers and monastaries where they train in esoteric meditation and copy books of knowledge. They fight to protect their property and working folk from harm ans sometime go on pilgrimages seeking knowledge and exchanging books with other monasteries.
Heretics of Xor are a unpopular but thriving cult. They welcome cannibalism, inbreeding, mutations and outsiders. They kidnap and convert members with sleep deprivation and starvation. Some sects are worse than others and some of their practices are in fact common, just more celebrated in public. While not chaotic and demonic they are prone to being corrupted. They publicly celebrate taboos as the means to enlightenment. Many camp around moths of Xor they feed sacrifices too. Many sects live under the surface of Xor and often trade and breed with things considered monsters.

Heroes on Xor while leaping about in human skin loin cloths need stuff to shout! While wielding mighty sawtooth blades made from giant lizard fangs, you need stuff to yell as you stab it into foes 2 or 3 times more than needed. It's stuff boring old priests say or a farmer accidentally hurting himself at work or a warrior trying smack talk. Perhaps a quote from the nominomicon or the secrets of the cannibal kabbalah. Heroes of Xor

So most cases people will want to come from a normal DnD setting and find Xor growing in some distant region or get sucked there through a portal. Another option is to be natives of Xor. Also as normal adventurers die some might need replacing.
Heroes of Xor will not blink at the visceral horror of Xorscapes. The diversity of a normal world will be more disturbing.
Life on Xor.
Food is everywhere but locals struggle to find non meat items which do grow in places and get farmed occasional or traded. Meat of Xor even cut free stays fresh for some time and is highly nutritious. It also makes you connected to the spirit of Xor. Dairy product are also available in form of milk, curds, yoghurt and cheese. Other fluids of Xor are edible but disgust outsiders. Best not to ask sometimes.
Water can be difficult to find and some use and make filters to extract drinkable water from Xor fluids. Some have adapted to drink blood.
Clothing is mostly from Xor skin but clothes and armour can be easily fashioned from slices of undying meat of Xor and are easily replaced every week or when damaged. You can wear your rations! Nudity is acceptable and some people are heavily tattooed and pierced. Piercings are a good way to keep wealth.
Growing up on Xor is often collective. Gender and sexual orientation is irrelevant to Xorians. Some tribes have learned to impregnate orifices of Xor and harvest babies from the Flesh of Xor or just take advantage of places where babies or adults are born naturally. Many creatures can act as surrogate parents and baby sitters. These creatures would give outsiders nightmares but Xorians find them endearing. Communes are standard for tribal folk who collectively raise children. Some places let children do as they please in a separate village then adopt them into adulthood when they reach puberty or pass a test. The perverse villagers, towns and cities are more likely to live as outsiders do.
Water is a common trade item as well as iron or copper or useful metals. Decorative metals are less desirable and seen as outsider tainted. Permanent traders recognize gold and silver as good for trade with outsiders but barbarians are disgusted by them.
Character Classes:
Fighters, warriors and barbarian types are most common. Communities need guardians to defend communities from monsters and to obtain useful materials like arthropod chitin. Warriors know how to fashion and care for living armour and weapons. Paladins and rangers are uncommon and protect Xor from chaos, outsiders, monsters and broken eco systems. Monks are in tune with their own Xor nature and live in peace with Xor, but they are living weapons who protects common folk and sacred places. Monks are often naked and hairless.
Clerics, priests, druids and shamen commune with the world spirit of Xor and try to live with harmony within the living systems of Xor. Many will try to heal wounds in Xor and expunge cancers, bad mutants, outsiders and bad chaos. Undead are especially hated as anathema to Xorian life. Necromancers are despised.
Thieves and rogues are used as scouts and retrieve valuable things without resorting to disturbing or killing Xorian systems that autonomously defend precious things. Thieves are knowledgeable in manipulating nerve clusters of biological gateways and using pheromones to calm guards and alarms. Bards are welcome and many play sinew and bone or living flesh instruments. They can pacify many threats and keep peoples cheer up and record oral history. Some cultures keep bard brains.
Wizards are knowledgeable on all kinds of arcane knowledge of Xor nature and lore but are seen as dangerous, corrupting and exploitative. They are more common with civilized people but many live in dungeons as bosses with their corrupt monster pets. Sorcerers are more instinctive and less literate. Their hedonistic lives and laziness are deplorable but more tolerated than wizards. Some people think all writing is wizardry.
Dwarves of Xor are hairless, often cannibalistic and live in the subdermal depths. They are masters at shaping Xor growth to make structures and tunnels and dont mind harming Xor to get what they want which causes problems. They are dedicated destroyers of demons, humanoids, chaos and bad mutants which is admirable. Some refer to themselves as morlocks who farm Eloi to eat.
Elves of Xor are of mostly of the blood type or bone type. Bone elves hate most races for being parasites on Xor. They create monsters and inhospitable zones and diseases and even encourage goblinoids. They wear bone armour and worship Xor as a deathbringer of species unfit to live in the paradise of Xor. Blood elves are cannibalistic slavers and drink blood. They are fanged and many call them vampires. They are cruel and murderous even feeding victims as sacrifices to the maws of Xor. Eldren are more peaceful but rare living in beautiful sculptured flesh citadels. Most of these are in ruin and the Eldren are unaware their kind are almost gone. Many used Xor as a means of plane travel so some still leave and arive. They often use metal and outside clothes, tools and technology gained during their long livespans. Eloi are hedonistic mostly clueless beings found in some Xor environments living lives of naked pleasure in some of the most pleasant and safe pockets of Xor or on farms of Morlocks. Al of these types may dislike humans or think of them and other demihumans as enemies but will unite with humans and demihumans vs Chaos, humanoids, ogres, trolls and giants.
Halflings are rare but tend to live near or with humans. Insane tribes of halfling cannibals are a menace to travelers. Most are greedy for food and sex. More common are hairless guineapig men who are functionally identical and thrive above and below the skin of Xor. The GP folk are more likable and trustworthy to meet in wilderness than the desperate horrible feral halflings.
Gnomes of Xor live in subdermal burrow complexes and live harmoniously with Xor. Unfortunately they are delicious and mostly hide. They can be befriended and they help people but from secret. If you find a waterskin and a bone knife you might in fact be helped by gnomes. Evil cannibalistic degenerate gnomes are a problem and sometimes burrow under a settlement and cause trouble, eating villagers for years before being discovered.
Tako are intelligent octopid fairy folk and some colonised Xor successfully, even living in the fluid tracks and veins of Xor where humans cannot. They vary in how assimilated to Xor they are from tribal worshipers who defend Xor and attack those damaging Xor to demon bonded chaos cultists. Some humans live peacefully with them others fear them. Some humans want to eat them or enslave them or are jealous of their sexual prowess.
Humanoids, giants, trolls, ogres are all common to Xor, a rival of the regular races forming coalitions against humans and demihumans. This has tended to unite humans and demi humans more. Beastmen work with both sides. The corrupted cancerous insane chaos trolls are hated but non evil types of trolls without madness or regeneration can still be found mostly in hiding. Flesh Giants and cyclopses were once were common on Xor and they hate and eat small folk. They employ ogres, humanoids and cancerous troll to destroy for them (and they eat them as punishment if they fail to bring them enemies).
The cancer trolls were once sane, mortal and one of the high races but when some tribes made pacts with chaos they gained their regeneration powers and now are entirely masses of cancer polyps insane with rage. Other monster people are wary of working with them. trolls are often mutated some becoming shoggoths.

Invaders of Xor

Xor is a living world of meat, plunder and wonder
A ever living mystery and world eater
People live on and in Xor like parasites
Bad things come from other worlds
Things not good to eat that must die
Strangers who do not accept the will of Xor!
All kinds of otherworlds invade Xor for a meal which has the danger Xor might flood that dimension. Xor only wants to peacefully eat universes and barley is aware of intruders parasitism. But look out when Xor does notice your dimension and is hungry. Some otherworlders are stranded here and join a community or start one. Parts of otherworlds might be found inside of Xor taking thousands of years to be assimilated. Xor might even be used as a nexus between worlds but a dangerous one. Bringing goods through the gates and leaving on both sides makes the worlds interconnected. Creatures of law may not be approving of Xor and consider it close to chaos or raw material for chaos to usurp. Invaders of Law act poorly and are often disliked by xorians unless they actually fight need someone to fight chaos.
One of these in a region will stand out and provide threats aplenty. Why not start between two of these or one at each compass point. Intruders usually have a way home but that might be be at a certain place or require a relic. Intruder gateways are for outright alien plunderers or explorers. Strange remnants are a place where unnatural to the nature of Xor creatures come from, a remnant of the past or otherworldly infection.

11 Demonic chaos - seeks to corrupt Xor into becoming a home for demon kind
12 Primal chaos - swarms of gelatinous tentacled alien horrors

1 Mile wide clod of earth with some intact ruined settlement survivors from some other world, semi buried intact ruins are their current lain and they are just exploring xor

6 Macroscopic life has infested the area attacking and feasting on Xor and spreading it's own single celled life forms colonies, some are individually baseball or beachball sized often linked in chains. Dangerous slimes, jellies, flagellum and strange life thrives
7 Bone castle once a living place housing a population now a desolate dead hollow, full of all kinds of unwholesome creatures and cults in the skeleton of a living citadel
8 Infected sickly swamp of putrid sweat, infections and ulcers form a unique environment, disgusting but welcoming to bugs and the goblins who hunt them. Demons and undead here prevent the land being healed
9 Crystalline life form ecology is absorbing life and fluid, growing and expanding into complex alien intelligences. Psionic beings have been attracted or empowered and come here
10 Dragonspawn Pits of Tiamat, mother of dragons has opened a gate here where thousands of baby dragons are fattening up on Xor for the next dragon apocalypse on some dimension. Tiamat only pops in occasionally 1in6. Xor does not mind dragons as they excrete his spoor on distant dimensions aiding it
11 Chaos warp point where creatures become mutated and prepare to kidnap and devour nearby peoples.
12 Chaos infection where a demon throne of a abyssal lord festers with it's horde. With intent to conquer the local area, warbands rair the surroundings often meeting Templars of Xor or Crusaders of Xor or many other local forces waging eternal war
