This is an option I might implement as an alternative to level zero starts for my homebrew. Basically, the party have a shared background and don't need to meet in a tavern as they have some past in common growing up. Party could roll or pick one. Possibly could be rolled or selected for an individual character also.

2 Barbarians
Tribal frontier folk living a harsh life and struggle against other tribes and civilisation

3 Farmers
Rural life planting crops and raising animals in service of some lord or city
Bonus Skill: Beast-Handling or Farming or Drive
4 Servants
Serving the nobility in a rural or urban household or manor
Bonus Skill: Etiquette or Grooming or Porter
5 Students
Learning various arts to work as scholars or scribes
Bonus Skill: Scribe or Numeracy or Bureaucracy
6 Musicians
Performing in taverns or houses or busking in the city streets
Bonus Skill: Music Lore or Voice or Poetry
7 Merchants
Working with traders in a shop or a merchant caravan or warehouse

Raised in a cloistered church or temple estate surrounded by monks and priests

War urchins taken as servants of a mercenary or millitary company or guards
